New Initiative to Boost Tribal Homestays and Tourism
The Ministry of Tourism has unveiled an exciting new scheme for the financial year 2025-26 called ‘Development of Homestays in Tribal Areas.’ This initiative, part of the Swadesh Darshan program under the Pradhan Mantri Janjatiya Unnat Gram Abhiyan (PM-JUGA), aims to enhance tourism potential in tribal regions while providing sustainable livelihoods to local communities.
The scheme is designed to transform the tourism landscape in tribal areas by developing homestays that showcase the rich culture and traditions of these communities. To support this endeavor, the government will provide substantial funding: up to ₹5 lakh for village community requirements, ₹5 lakh for building two new rooms per household, and up to ₹3 lakh for renovating existing rooms for each household. This funding will empower tribal families to host visitors, thereby creating new economic opportunities.
Community-Centric Responsible Tourism
This initiative not only seeks to attract tourists but also emphasizes the importance of responsible tourism practices. By facilitating cultural exchanges between visitors and indigenous residents, the scheme promises an authentic experience that benefits both parties. Tourists will have the unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the tribal lifestyle, while local families receive the socio-economic advantages of increased tourism.
Moreover, the program will include capacity-building measures that focus on skills development for local communities. This will ensure that residents are well-equipped to manage tourism facilities and services sustainably, promoting long-term benefits for the region. Additionally, marketing support will be provided to help promote tribal homestays effectively.
Projects Approved in Multiple States
The Ministry has already greenlighted projects under this scheme in five states and union territories, including Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Mizoram, Uttarakhand, and the Union Territory of Ladakh. The total allocation for these projects amounts to ₹17.52 crore. However, it’s important to note that, as of now, no funds have been disbursed.
This information was shared by Union Minister for Tourism and Culture, Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, during a written reply in the Rajya Sabha. The initiative reflects the government’s commitment to promoting tourism that is not only economically viable but also respectful of the unique cultural heritage of tribal communities across India.
