New Initiative Targets Substance Abuse in Schools Nationwide
In a significant move to combat growing substance abuse among children and adolescents, the Indian government has rolled out a comprehensive three-year Action Plan as part of its Nasha Mukht Bharat initiative. This initiative was outlined in a joint advisory issued by senior officials from both the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of Education, which aims to implement crucial preventive measures across educational institutions in a mission-oriented approach.
As discussions at the recent 9th Apex Meeting of the Narco-Coordination Centre (NCORD) highlighted, substance abuse has become a critical public health concern that requires urgent action. Union Home Minister Shri Amit Shah chaired the meeting, where participants stressed the importance of a unified government strategy to tackle drug-related issues. The roadmap will extend until 2029 and will include a robust review mechanism to ensure timely execution and accountability.
Schools as Frontline Defenders Against Substance Abuse
The new action plan places a strong emphasis on the role of schools in raising awareness and promoting behavioral change among students. Key elements of the plan include designating a 500-metre radius around schools as drug-free zones, enforcing strict reporting protocols for violations through school authorities, and engaging local law enforcement when necessary.
Alongside these measures, the initiative adopts a holistic approach to addressing substance abuse. It includes sustained awareness campaigns, integration of preventive education into the school curriculum, and capacity building for teachers and school leaders. Furthermore, the plan encourages peer-led initiatives, ensuring that students are actively involved in promoting a drug-free environment.
Collaboration and Monitoring to Ensure Success
The government has urged States and Union Territories to prioritize the adoption of this action plan across all public and private schools. To facilitate this, each state is advised to appoint designated Nodal Officers and establish a strong monitoring framework that connects various departments, including law enforcement.
Creating a safe, healthy, and substance-free environment in schools is the ultimate goal of this initiative. By turning educational institutions into the forefront of prevention efforts, the government seeks to significantly reduce the incidence of substance abuse among youth.
