New Health Surveys Reveal Vital Insights

The National Statistics Office (NSO) has announced the results of its latest Household Social Consumption: Health survey, conducted every five years. This comprehensive survey aims to provide crucial data on health sector usage, including morbidity rates across various demographics and the extent of healthcare services utilized. Additionally, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare’s National Family Health Survey (NFHS) offers insights into family welfare and health trends, with the latest report released in 2022.

Household Social Consumption: Health Survey Insights

The NSO, operating under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI), conducts the Household Social Consumption: Health survey to gather extensive data on health-related issues across India. This survey, carried out every five years, focuses on key aspects such as the prevalence of morbidity among different age and gender groups, as well as regional variations. A significant part of the survey examines the use of healthcare services provided by the government, particularly hospitalization and medical care received as in-patients in medical institutions.

In addition to tracking the types of ailments that lead individuals to seek medical care, the survey also investigates the extent of government hospital usage and the financial burden of treatment from both public and private sectors. It breaks down healthcare expenditures into various categories, providing a detailed view of costs associated with in-patient and out-patient care. Furthermore, the survey assesses the use of both private and public hospitals for childbirth, including costs incurred and the availability of pre-natal and post-natal care for mothers.

National Family Health Survey: A Broader Perspective

Complementing the NSO’s efforts, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoH&FW) conducts the National Family Health Survey (NFHS) approximately every three years. This integrated survey collects data on a wide range of health and family welfare topics, including population characteristics, fertility rates, family planning, and maternal and child health. The NFHS also addresses critical issues such as nutrition, morbidity, healthcare access, and women’s empowerment.

The most recent NFHS-5 was conducted between 2019 and 2021, with its findings released in 2022. This survey plays a crucial role in shaping health policies and programs by providing a comprehensive overview of health trends and challenges faced by families across India. The data collected from both the NSO and NFHS surveys is vital for understanding the health landscape and guiding future health initiatives.

Government’s Commitment to Health Data Transparency

In a recent statement to the Lok Sabha, Rao Inderjit Singh, Minister of State (Independent Charge) for MoSPI, highlighted the importance of these surveys in generating essential health data. He emphasized that the information gathered is crucial for policymakers to make informed decisions regarding health services and programs. The NSO’s Household Social Consumption: Health survey and the NFHS collectively provide a wealth of information that can help address health disparities and improve healthcare access across the country.

As these surveys continue to evolve, they will remain instrumental in shaping India’s health policies and ensuring that the needs of its diverse population are met effectively. The reports from these surveys are available on the respective ministry websites, offering transparency and accessibility to the public.
