New ESIC Hospital Inaugurated in Karnataka to Boost Worker Welfare

The Union Minister of Labour & Employment and Youth Affairs & Sports, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, inaugurated a new 100-bedded Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) Hospital in Doddaballapur, Karnataka, today. In a significant move for worker welfare, he also laid the foundation for a second 100-bedded ESIC Hospital in Bellary, Karnataka, via remote ceremony. Notable figures such as Sushri Shobha Karandlaje, Minister of State for Labour and Employment, and Shri K. Sudhakar, a Member of the Lok Sabha, attended the event.

Healthcare Commitment for Workers

During his address, Dr. Mandaviya highlighted that accessibility to quality healthcare is a fundamental aspect of social security for workers. He stated, “Shramik is the true builder of the nation and is our Vishwakarma. It is our responsibility to ensure all necessary arrangements for their welfare.” Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, the dignity and empowerment of workers have become central to governance and development efforts, he emphasized.

Growth in Social Security Coverage

Dr. Mandaviya shared crucial statistics, noting that ESIC coverage has significantly expanded over the last ten years. The number of insured individuals has doubled from approximately 2 crore to 4 crore. He mentioned that more than 40 crore workers in India are now protected under various social security schemes, raising coverage from 19% in 2015 to over 64% today, as reported by the International Labour Organisation (ILO).

Labour Reforms and Educational Opportunities

In relation to labour reforms, the Minister pointed out the advantages of the four Labour Codes, which promote transparency and accountability while ensuring inclusivity. He also mentioned that there are now mandatory appointment letters, equal pay for men and women, and guaranteed ESIC coverage for workers in hazardous jobs. Furthermore, 20 ESIC medical colleges have been set up, reserving 40–50% of seats for children of insured workers, creating educational opportunities for their families.

Preventive Healthcare Initiatives

Dr. Mandaviya announced an important preventive healthcare initiative. Starting May 7, there will be mandatory health check-ups for workers over 40 years old to detect diseases early. This nationwide screening drive aims to ensure comprehensive coverage across ESIC hospitals throughout the country.

Regional Impact of New Facilities

Concerning the newly opened Doddaballapur hospital, the Minister highlighted its significance for the local workforce, particularly in an area with numerous textile industries employing over 1.5 lakh registered workers. In total, around 5.5 lakh people will benefit from the ESIC healthcare services at this facility, receiving completely free medical services.

A Commitment to Worker Welfare

Reaffirming the government’s dedication to worker welfare, Dr. Mandaviya stated that improving the quality of life for India’s workforce is a top priority. The inauguration also included the recognition of construction workers who contributed to the hospital’s development and the distribution of benefits to ESI beneficiaries.

Facility Details and Future Plans

The newly inaugurated ESIC Hospital in Doddaballapur is a multi-specialty secondary care facility built over five acres, costing ₹101.14 crore. It features 32 staff quarters and key services like General Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, and more.
