New Coffee Table Book Showcases Karnataka’s Spiritual Train Journey

In a significant step towards promoting cultural and spiritual tourism, Shri V. Somanna, the Union Minister of State for Railways and Jal Shakti, officially launched the coffee table book titled “Karnataka Bharat Gaurav Train: Journey of a Thousand Shrines” at Rail Bhawan on February 23, 2026. This book serves as a vibrant visual and narrative tribute to one of Indian Railways’ most transformative initiatives aimed at enhancing religious tourism.

During the launch, Shri Somanna emphasized that the book encapsulates the essence, vision, and collaborative spirit of a pioneering initiative that merges faith, culture, heritage, and modern railway infrastructure. He acknowledged Dr. Anup Dayanand, IRTS (Retd.), as the visionary behind this remarkable project.

Highlighting the Initiative

The Karnataka Bharat Gaurav Train initiative has successfully enabled over 30,000 devotees from Karnataka to realize their lifelong dreams of visiting sacred sites like Kashi at an affordable cost. This has been made possible under the Bharat Gaurav Scheme, which aims to facilitate spiritual journeys for pilgrims.

Shri Somanna noted that this book is more than just a record of a railway service; it highlights a journey of faith, culture, and heritage. He expressed hope that the book would inspire more individuals to embark on these spiritual journeys.

A ‘Moving Gallery of India’

This coffee table book elaborates on the Karnataka Bharat Gaurav Train as a “moving gallery of India,” detailing its innovatively designed coaches, quality onboard amenities, and carefully curated spiritual circuits. It prioritizes passenger comfort, accessibility, and affordability, especially for senior citizens and first-time pilgrims, supported by favorable policies and state funding.

At its heart, the book discusses the conception, evolution, and successful implementation of the Karnataka Bharat Gaurav Train, showcasing its role in the broader context of Indian Railways’ Bharat Gaurav Policy.

Promoting Spiritual Connectivity

The Karnataka Bharat Gaurav Train stands out as a flagship pilgrimage tourism initiative under Indian Railways’ Bharat Gaurav Policy. It aims to reposition the Railways as a key player in fostering tourism, culture, and spiritual connectivity. This initiative aligns with national campaigns such as “Dekho Apna Desh” and “Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat,” encouraging national unity through shared spiritual experiences.

The train connects pilgrims from Karnataka to various religious destinations across India through themed journeys, including Kashi Darshan, Jyotirlinga Darshan, and Shakti Peetha Yatra. With all-inclusive packages that cover rail travel, meals, accommodation, transportation, guides, and sightseeing, the train offers a seamless and dignified experience.

Success So Far

As per recent statistics, the Karnataka Bharat Gaurav Train has successfully operated 46 trips, accommodating 28,786 pilgrims and generating approximately ₹25.57 crore in revenue for Indian Railways. This success significantly contributes to the overarching goal of inclusive pilgrimage tourism in India.
