New Bypass to Ease Traffic and Boost Connectivity in Dehradun
In a significant move to enhance regional connectivity and alleviate traffic congestion in Dehradun, the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has embarked on constructing a 12 km long Greenfield four-lane access-controlled bypass. This vital link will connect to the Delhi-Dehradun Economic Corridor within the picturesque state of Uttarakhand. The new alignment will stretch from Jhajhra to the new Paonta Saheb-Ballupur section of NH-7, culminating at the Delhi-Dehradun Economic Corridor near the Asharori Check Post in Dehradun District.
With an investment of approximately Rs. 716 crores, the project is already seeing physical progress with about 44 percent completion. It is expected to wrap up by April 2027 and is strategically designed to serve as an alternate route, guiding non-destined traffic away from the urban core of Dehradun city. This change will benefit areas such as the Selaqui industrial area, Vikasnagar, Herbertpur in Uttarakhand, and Paonta Sahib in Himachal Pradesh.
Environmental Considerations and Wildlife Protection
Designed for long-term sustainability, the bypass will maintain a design speed of 100 km/h. However, certain sections will limit speeds to 80 km/h to mitigate impacts on surrounding forests. Notably, the highway’s Right of Way will be reduced to 30 meters, significantly lower than the conventional width of 60 meters, facilitating the preservation of forest trees and ecological integrity.
Moreover, the project incorporates essential measures for wildlife protection. A 350-meter-long Vehicular Over Pass (VOP) will be built to enable safe passage for large animals, complemented by a separate Cattle Over Pass (COP). In total, the construction will include seven minor bridges and 21 box culverts to ensure wildlife can traverse the area safely, while five dedicated Hume Pipe culverts will aid the movement of smaller species like reptiles and amphibians.
Enhancements for Safety and Tourism
To enhance both safety and ecological stability, continuous fencing will be installed along the project stretch along with clear signage indicating speed limits and wildlife zones. These initiatives aim to reduce human-wildlife conflicts and promote safe movement of animals within the forest. Furthermore, the bypass will improve access to popular tourist destinations, including Mussoorie, thus bolstering tourism growth in the region.
Upon its completion, the bypass is set to bring significant relief to the residents of Dehradun by redirecting heavy and transit traffic away from the city. This improvement is expected to enhance urban mobility and elevate the overall quality of life in the area.
