Department of Consumer Affairs ordered NCCF and NAFED to sell tomatoes at retail price of Rs.50/- per kg from 15th August 2023 due to falling tomato prices in wholesale markets.
The tomato retailing in Delhi-NCR had started since 14thth July 2023. Until 13th In August 2023 the two agencies purchased a total of 15 lakh kg of tomatoes which are continuously being disposed of to retail consumers in major consumption hubs across the country. These locations include Delhi-NCR, Rajasthan (Jaipur, Kota), Uttar Pradesh (Lucknow, Kanpur, Varanasi, Prayagraj) and Bihar (Patna, Muzaffarpur, Arrah, Buxar).
The retail price of tomatoes purchased from NCCF and NAFED was initially set at Rs.90/- per kg and later reduced to Rs.80/- per kg from 16th July 2023 and subsequently at Rs.70/- per kg from 20.07.2023. The latest reduction to Rs.50/- per kg will further benefit consumers.
In recent days, NCCF has significantly increased the amount of tomatoes supplied to retail consumers by stationing its mobile vans at 70 locations across Delhi and 15 locations in Noida and Greater Noida. In addition, NCCF continues to sell tomatoes retail through the ONDC (Open Network for Digital Commerce) platform.
It can be recalled that on the recommendation of the Department of Consumer Affairs, NCCF and NAFED had started the procurement of tomato from mandis in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Maharashtra for simultaneous disposal in the main consumption centers where retail prices recorded the maximum increase in the last month .
