NCA’s 48th Meeting: A Step Towards Archival Excellence
The 48th Meeting of the National Committee of Archivists (NCA) took place on November 29, 2024, at the Statue of Unity in Kevadiya, Gujarat. This two-day event marked the second time the NCA convened in Gujarat, the first being in 1982. The meeting brought together archivists from across India to discuss pressing issues in the field of archival science, share knowledge, and explore new technologies for preserving the nation’s rich history.
A Collaborative Effort
The 48th NCA meeting was a joint initiative between the National Archives of India and the Gujarat State Archives. Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, the Minister for Tourism and Culture, sent a video message praising the efforts of the Gujarat government and the Chief Minister, Shri Bhupendra Bhai Patel. He emphasized the importance of preserving historical records, which are often more fragile than physical monuments. Shekhawat highlighted the need for specialized training programs to ensure the proper preservation of these records.
The event was inaugurated by Shri Arun Singhal, the Director General of Archives at the National Archives of India and Chairman of the NCA. Dr. Shailesh Solanki, Director of the Gujarat State Archives, welcomed the delegates. The meeting also saw the launch of an online portal by the Gujarat State Archives, aimed at providing easier access to digitized records. This initiative is part of a broader effort to modernize archival practices and make historical documents more accessible to the public.
Launching New Publications
During the inaugural session, three significant publications were launched. The first was “The Royal Heritage of Gujarat,” authored by the late Prof. Makarand Mehta and published by the Gujarat State Archives. The second was “The Diary of Manu Gandhi: 1946-1948,” edited by Prof. Tridip Suhrud, published by the National Archives of India in collaboration with Oxford University Press. The third publication, “Descriptive List of Mutiny Papers, Vol. 9,” was edited by Muzaffar-e Islam and published by the National Archives of India and Yatra Books.
These publications aim to enrich the understanding of India’s historical narrative and provide valuable resources for researchers and historians. The launch of these books reflects the NCA’s commitment to promoting scholarly work and enhancing public knowledge about India’s archival heritage.
Embracing Technology and Oral Histories
The NCA meeting also focused on the integration of technology in archival practices. Delegates discussed the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) to facilitate access to digitized archival materials. They explored various outreach programs designed to increase the utilization of archival resources. An online flipbook titled “Chronicles of India: A Curated Book,” based on the National Archives of India’s social media posts, was also introduced.
A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to oral archives, emphasizing the importance of preserving oral histories. This session was inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi‘s recent remarks on the value of oral traditions. Delegates agreed on the necessity of developing a robust framework for oral archives and decided to form a sub-committee to establish standard operating procedures.
Looking Ahead
The 48th NCA meeting attracted participants from various states, including Delhi, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, and others. Some delegates attended virtually from states like Assam and Goa. The discussions during the meeting highlighted the need for a concerted approach to revitalizing archival administration and records management across the country.
The next NCA meeting is scheduled for April 14-15, 2025. As archivists continue to navigate the challenges of preserving India’s documentary heritage, the insights gained from this meeting will play a crucial role in shaping the future of archival practices in India. The commitment to leveraging digital technologies and enhancing accessibility will ensure that the nation’s rich history remains preserved for future generations.
