Nationwide Fire Safety Week Launched for Healthcare Facilities
In a significant initiative to enhance safety in healthcare environments, the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has launched a nationwide observance of Fire Safety Week. This campaign commenced on May 4 and will run until May 10, 2026, in collaboration with all States, Union Territories, and pertinent Central Ministries and Departments.
The observance kicked off with a pledge ceremony that emphasized the theme “Fire Safety in Health Facilities.” Union Health Secretary Smt. Punya Salila Srivastava spearheaded the event, underscoring the joint commitment of healthcare institutions to bolster fire prevention and emergency readiness.
Reinforcing Shared Responsibility
During the ceremony, Smt. Srivastava articulated the theme for this year, “Safe Schools, Safe Hospitals, and a Fire-Safety Aware Society: Together for Fire Prevention.” She highlighted that the safety of institutions is a collective obligation and urged a thoughtful evaluation of fire safety infrastructure. The Union Health Secretary called for regular uploads of fire safety audit details on the IHIP portal to ensure sustained compliance with safety standards.
In a show of progress, Smt. Srivastava noted that over 50,000 participants have completed the iGOT fire safety course. She emphasized the need to increase these numbers and to engage citizens actively to create a robust fire safety culture.
Proactive Measures and Training
Shri Krishna S. Vatsa, Head of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), stressed a proactive approach, advocating for a nationwide campaign to enhance fire safety within hospitals. He announced plans for five regional programs and various state-level initiatives to bolster capacity and readiness. The emphasis on self-certification for regular audits and ongoing awareness was a key point in his address.
Shri Sunil Kumar Jha, Director General of Fire Services, echoed the need for rigorous safety protocols in healthcare spaces where even minor oversights can have dire consequences. He called for continuous vigilance and adherence to safety norms.
New Guidelines for Fire Safety
As part of this observance, the Ministry officially released the National Guidelines on Fire and Life Safety in Healthcare Facilities (2026). These guidelines were formulated through extensive consultations with experts, aiming to create a comprehensive framework for fire safety across healthcare establishments. The guidelines cover governance, risk assessment, emergency response systems, and specialized areas requiring heightened safety measures, such as ICUs and OTs.
Throughout Fire Safety Week, numerous activities will raise awareness and preparedness regarding fire hazards. These include audits, mock drills, demonstrations on fire detection systems, and webinars sharing best practices.
Call for Engagement
The Union Health Ministry has circulated detailed checklists to ensure that all healthcare facilities, public and private, conduct thorough fire and electrical safety audits. States and Union Territories have been encouraged to host targeted awareness campaigns in medical colleges and hospitals, including competitions and demonstrations to foster a culture of safety.
All stakeholders are urged to engage actively during this week and adopt the prescribed guidelines to build a safe and resilient healthcare system for patients, caregivers, and healthcare workers nationwide.
