National Workshop Advances Circular Economy in Telecom Sector
In a collaborative effort, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) hosted a significant National Workshop today in New Delhi, aimed at promoting circular economy practices within India’s telecom sector. The event brought together a diverse group of stakeholders, including policymakers, industry leaders, and technology providers, to discuss strategies for enhancing sustainability in telecommunications.
The workshop titled **“Advancing Circular Economy in the Telecom Sector: Enabling Policy & Practice”** focused on fostering a shared vision among participants, who brainstormed actionable steps to integrate circularity into various aspects of telecom operations. Key themes included sustainable product design, resource efficiency, lifecycle management, the use of digital tools, and innovative financing mechanisms.
Moderated by Dr. Shilpi Karmakar, a Project Manager at UNDP, the inaugural session set the stage for deeper discussions. Important contributions were made by various leaders, including Dr. Ashish Chaturvedi from UNDP, who provided context on the workshop’s objectives. Noteworthy addresses were delivered by Ms. Sunita Verma of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology and Shri Kamendra Kumar, former Director of TCIL.
During the keynote address, Shri R. N. Palai, Member (Technology) of the Digital Communications Commission, highlighted that adopting sustainability in telecom is now a cornerstone of strategic planning rather than an optional consideration. He underscored the sector’s responsibility to lead environmentally friendly initiatives, considering its reach to over 1.2 billion subscribers in India.
Shri Palai pointed out that while the telecom sector accounts for less than two percent of the country’s greenhouse gas emissions, it plays a crucial role in facilitating climate action across many industries. He emphasized that sustainability must encompass more than energy efficiency and must address the entire lifecycle of telecom products, advocating for a shift in approach from a linear use-and-discard model toward a regenerative system.
Dr. Angela Lusigi, UNDP’s Resident Representative, reinforced the importance of multi-stakeholder collaboration, urging participants to utilize the workshop as a platform for developing a comprehensive and time-bound roadmap for circularity within the telecom sector.
A key highlight of the workshop was a presentation by Shri Arun Agarwal, presenting a Circular Economy Action Plan for the Indian Telecom Sector. This plan proposed strategies regarding sustainable design and manufacturing, lifecycle management, e-waste reduction, and the implementation of digital tracking systems to enhance the robustness of supply chains.
The event featured two panels that delved into various pertinent topics. The first discussion, moderated by Shri Arun Agarwal, revolved around reshaping the telecom supply chain for improved circularity and sustainability. Experts discussed government initiatives aimed at reducing challenges in the circular telecom supply chain and emphasized sustainable procurement practices.
The second panel focused on utilizing digital tools to facilitate the transition toward a circular economy in telecom. Moderated by Dr. Shilpi Karmakar, this discussion attracted insights on the integration of technologies like data analytics, AI, and IoT to bolster circular efforts.
In conclusion, participants echoed a shared commitment to progress beyond theoretical discussions toward actionable implementation. Emphasizing the need for a cohesive ecosystem-level approach, the workshop fostered an environment of collaboration that aligns governmental direction with industry innovation, aiming to pave the way for a sustainable future in India’s telecom sector.
