National Science Day 2023: Inspiring Future Innovators

India celebrated National Science Day on February 28, honoring the groundbreaking discovery of the Raman effect by Sir C.V. Raman. This year’s theme, “Empowering Indian Youth for Global Leadership in Science & Innovation for Viksit Bharat,” emphasizes the importance of nurturing young minds in scientific fields. The event featured various activities aimed at promoting scientific awareness and innovation among students.

Celebrating Science with AAGAZ 3.0

The AcSIR Science Club of CSIR-IIP organized a vibrant event titled โ€œAAGAZ 3.0โ€ to mark National Science Day. The event was attended by notable guests, including Shri Gopal Joshi, Executive Director and Head of KDMIPE at ONGC, who served as the Chief Guest, and Dr. Bharat Newalkar, Chief General Manager of R&D at BPCL, as the Guest of Honour. The program commenced with a traditional lamp lighting ceremony, followed by a Saraswati Vandana, symbolizing the pursuit of knowledge.

Ms. Ekta, the Student Coordinator of the Science Club, provided an overview of the club’s activities, highlighting its role in fostering scientific curiosity among students. Dr. Sanat Kumar, Chairman of the Organizing Committee for AAGAZ 3.0, welcomed attendees and underscored the significance of National Science Day in recognizing scientific achievements and inspiring future generations.

Encouraging Young Minds for a Sustainable Future

Dr. Harender Singh Bisht, Director of CSIR-IIP, addressed the gathering, emphasizing the theme’s focus on empowering youth to contribute to a developed India, or Viksit Bharat. He stressed the need for innovative thinking that extends beyond traditional laboratory research to address societal challenges and promote sustainable solutions. Dr. Bharat Newalkar echoed this sentiment, discussing pressing societal issues such as health, climate change, and energy security. He advocated for increased opportunities for women in research and innovation, highlighting their crucial role in addressing these challenges.

Insights from Industry Leaders

Shri Gopal Joshi shared valuable insights on the qualities essential for scientific success, including persistence, keen observation, and the importance of revalidation. He illustrated his point with the example of WD-40, which took 40 attempts to perfect. Joshi also discussed the complexities of oil and gas exploration in India, emphasizing the need for adaptability and resilience in scientific endeavors. He reassured the audience that petroleum will remain a significant energy source for the foreseeable future, underscoring the role of emerging scientists in solving national issues and contributing to a Viksit Bharat.

Engaging Students Through Creative Activities

The celebration saw enthusiastic participation from over 200 students, who engaged in various activities such as Rangoli competitions themed around Viksit Bharat, photography contests showcasing the natural beauty of Uttarakhand, and graphical abstract competitions focused on lab safety. These activities aimed to foster creativity and awareness among students regarding scientific principles and environmental conservation.

Later in the day, the Oil Marketing Companies (OMC) held the valedictory function for the 15-day SAKSHAM program at the CSIR-IIP auditorium. This initiative, launched by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, aims to raise awareness about petroleum conservation. Hemant Rathore, Executive Director of IOCL, emphasized the importance of a circular economy, while Dr. H.S. Bisht highlighted the increasing demand for fossil fuels and the necessity for improved energy efficiency alongside renewable energy initiatives. The event concluded with an energy conservation pledge administered by Chief Guest Amit Kumar Sinha, IPS, and a Nukkad Natak performance promoting energy-saving practices.

National Science Day 2023 served as a platform to inspire the next generation of scientists and innovators, reinforcing the importance of scientific inquiry and collaboration in addressing global challenges.
