Namami Gange Mission 2.0: Major Projects Completed

In a significant milestone for the Namami Gange Mission 2.0, seven major sewage treatment projects have been completed in the latter half of FY 2024โ€“25. These initiatives, located in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Delhi, aim to prevent sewage from contaminating rivers, thereby enhancing water quality and promoting river rejuvenation. With these projects, the total sewage treatment capacity under the Namami Gange Program has reached 3,722 MLD, with 157 sewage treatment plants (STPs) now operational.

Investment and Infrastructure Development

The total investment for these completed projects amounts to โ‚น1,772 crore, focusing on improving wastewater treatment across various regions. In Farrukhabad, Uttar Pradesh, a state-of-the-art STP with a capacity of 47.70 MLD has been established, along with an interception and diversion network. This project, costing โ‚น261 crore, is a crucial step towards restoring the Ganga’s natural purity. The initiative not only aims to enhance the river’s water quality but also supports the local community by improving sanitation infrastructure.

In Ayodhya, another significant project has been completed, featuring a 33 MLD STP and an interception and diversion network at a cost of โ‚น222 crore. This development is expected to clean the Saryu River, preserving its religious significance while promoting environmental sustainability. Additionally, in Muzaffarnagar, a 32.50 MLD STP has been completed for โ‚น234 crore, contributing to the rejuvenation of the Kali West and Hindon rivers. These projects are designed under the Hybrid Annuity Model, ensuring their long-term success and environmental effectiveness.

Projects in Bihar and Delhi

Bihar has also seen substantial progress with the construction of several STPs aimed at conserving the Ganga River. In Bakhtiyarpur, a 10 MLD STP and an interception and diversion network have been built at a cost of โ‚น85 crore, addressing pollution in the area. Similarly, a 7 MLD STP in Fatuha has been established under a โ‚น35.49 crore project, enhancing the region’s drainage system. In Phulwari Sharif, a 6 MLD STP project has been initiated at a cost of โ‚น46 crore, furthering the goal of cleanliness and sustainable development. All these projects follow the Design-Build-Operate-Transfer (DBOT) model, promoting efficiency and accountability.

In Delhi, the completion of Asiaโ€™s largest STP, with a capacity of 564 MLD, marks a significant achievement. This project, costing โ‚น666 crore, aims to conserve the Yamuna River and adheres to National Green Tribunal (NGT) norms, utilizing advanced A2O (Anaerobic-Anoxic-Oxic) technology. The successful implementation of these projects reflects a commitment to improving urban sanitation and river health.

Overall Impact and Future Goals

In the first half of FY 2024โ€“25, eight additional pollution control projects were completed, including initiatives in Patna-Danapur, Patna Maner, Kairana, and Lucknow, bringing the total number of completed projects for the financial year to 15. The cumulative investment for these projects stands at โ‚น3,184 crore. These accomplishments signify a substantial step towards achieving cleaner rivers and improved urban sanitation, reinforcing the mission’s core objective of sustainable and holistic river rejuvenation.

As these projects come online, they not only promise to enhance the ecological health of the rivers but also aim to uplift the quality of life for communities dependent on these water bodies. The Namami Gange Mission continues to make strides in its commitment to restoring the Ganga and other rivers across India.
