Myanmar President U Min Aung Hlaing Completes Historic Visit to India
In a significant step towards enhancing bilateral relations, H.E. U Min Aung Hlaing, President of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, visited India for the first time officially from 30 May to 3 June 2026 at the invitation of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. During this visit, the President was accompanied by key ministers and a business delegation from various sectors, reflecting the depth and variety of ties between the two nations.
Bilateral Talks and Business Engagement
On 1 June, President U Min Aung Hlaing engaged in extensive discussions with Prime Minister Modi, where they reviewed bilateral, regional, and global issues of mutual concern. A luncheon hosted by the Prime Minister honored the visiting leader, underlining the warm hospitality extended to the Myanmar delegation. In addition to the Prime Minister, external affairs initiatives were furthered through meetings with Union Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar and National Security Adviser Shri Ajit Doval.

The President commenced his visit with a spiritual pilgrimage to Bodh Gaya on 30 May, where he offered prayers at significant Buddhist sites. This visit highlighted the time-honored spiritual and cultural connections between the peoples of Myanmar and India.
Exploring Business Opportunities
The President’s agenda included a keynote address at the India-Myanmar Business Conclave held in New Delhi on 31 May. Business leaders from both countries came together to explore opportunities for expanding trade and commercial relations, signaling a commitment to fostering economic ties.
Focus on Connectivity and Cooperation
During their discussions, Prime Minister Modi emphasized Myanmar’s strategic role in India’s foreign policy, particularly under the frameworks of Neighbourhood First and Act East. Both leaders agreed on enhancing connectivity through projects like the Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport and the India-Myanmar-Thailand trilateral highway, aiming for shared economic prosperity.
Educational and Trade Initiatives
As a part of strengthening ties, the Prime Minister announced an increase in the Mekong Ganga ICCR scholarships for Myanmar students, from 36 to 100, starting in 2026. In addition, both leaders expressed a shared vision for facilitating bilateral trade through the Rupee-Kyat settlement mechanism, building on the successful growth of this trade relation since its introduction in May 2024.
Commitment to Security and Cooperation
Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to mutual security interests, with the President of Myanmar ensuring that his country would not allow its territory to be used against India’s security concerns. Prime Minister Modi also extended support for Myanmar’s efforts towards peace, stability, and socio-economic development.
