MOU Signed to Enhance Cooperation and Peace Based on Established Teachings

During the recent exposition in Vietnam showcasing the Holy Relics of the Buddha from India, a significant Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed to enhance cooperation between the International Buddhist Confederation (IBC) and the National Vietnam Buddhist Sangha (VBS). The event coincided with the United Nations Day of Vesak 2025 and was attended by notable figures, including India’s Union Minister of Minority Affairs, Shri Kiren Rijiju. This agreement aims to promote the core values of Buddhism and strengthen ties between the Buddhist communities of India and Vietnam.
Signing of the Memorandum of Understanding
The MOU was signed by Ven. Shartse Khensur Rinpoche Jangchup Choeden, Secretary General of the IBC, and Most Ven. Dr. Thich Thien Nhon, President of the VBS. This agreement builds upon a previous accord established on May 29, 2022, which sought to deepen collaboration and advance shared ideals rooted in the teachings of the Buddha. The signing ceremony was marked by a spirit of unity and commitment to fostering compassion, wisdom, and peace among Buddhist practitioners.
Launch of the Vietnam Chapter of the IBC
In addition to the MOU, the event also marked the official launch of the Vietnam Chapter of the IBC. This milestone was witnessed by prominent figures, including Most Ven. Thich Thien Phap, Vice President of the Sangha, and Mr. Abhijit Halder, Director General of the IBC. The Indian Ambassador to Vietnam, Shri Sandeep Arya, and Most Ven. Dr. Thich Nhat Tu, Standing Vice Chancellor of Vietnam Buddhist University, were also present. The gathering included senior members of the VBS, who have actively participated in India-related initiatives, highlighting the strong ties between the two nations.
Objectives of the New Chapter
The newly established Vietnam Chapter of the IBC aims to serve as a platform for promoting the core values of Buddha Dhamma within Vietnam and beyond. It seeks to contribute to global peace, harmony, and sustainable development while strengthening the bonds of brotherhood among various Buddhist traditions and practitioners worldwide. The chapter will facilitate cultural, educational, and humanitarian exchanges, supporting research and events that enhance the understanding and dissemination of Buddhist teachings.
Strengthening Ties Between Buddhist Communities
The agreement between the IBC and the VBS reinforces their longstanding partnership, as senior members of the VBS have been integral to the governing body of the IBC since its inception. This collaboration is expected to further solidify the relationship between the Buddhist communities of India and Vietnam, allowing for greater representation of Vietnam’s Buddhist community in regional and international forums coordinated by the IBC. The MOU signifies a commitment to mutual support and shared goals in promoting Buddhist values and practices across borders.
