MoSPI Revamps IIP Methodology for Enhanced Accuracy
The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) is set to revise the **Index of Industrial Production (IIP)** methodology, aiming to improve its accuracy and relevance in an evolving economic landscape. This base revision exercise will see MoSPI reevaluating existing methods, exploring new data sources, and incorporating insights from extensive consultations with experts, academicians, and stakeholders.
Traditionally, the IIP has utilized a fixed-base Laspeyres framework, where sectoral and industry weights have remained unchanged until the next base-year revision. However, as industrial dynamics shift due to changes in demand, technology, and policy, certain industries grow, while others may decline or vanish. New industries are also emerging, making fixed weights less relevant over time. As a result, the effectiveness of the indices can be compromised. To address these issues, MoSPI is adopting a chain-based method for compiling the IIP, which allows for annual adjustments in weights. This approach aims to better reflect the current production structure and yield more precise results.
Stakeholder Engagement Encouraged
In a bid to engage stakeholders in this significant transition, MoSPI has released **Discussion Paper 2.0: Adoption of Chain-Based Index of Industrial Production (IIP)**. This document details the proposed methodology for transitioning to chain-linked indices. MoSPI invites feedback from experts, academicians, Central government ministries, State governments, financial institutions, and other relevant parties on the proposed changes.
The Discussion Paper is publicly accessible on the MoSPI website, where stakeholders can review the document and provide their insights. Comments and suggestions are being accepted until January 25, 2026, via email at [email protected]. This collaborative effort is expected to lead to a more robust and contemporary index that accurately captures the industrial production landscape.
As the industrial sector continues to adapt and transform, MoSPI’s initiatives demonstrate a commitment to maintaining reliable statistical measures that reflect the realities of the economy.
