Modi and Disanayaka Strengthen India-Sri Lanka Ties at AI Summit
Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Disanayaka in New Delhi today. The meeting coincided with Disanayaka’s participation in the India-AI Impact Summit, marking his second visit to India since taking office in December 2024. The discussions focused on enhancing the partnership between the two nations, particularly following recent high-level visits.
Both leaders took the opportunity to review the progress of bilateral initiatives that have emerged from these visits. Notably, they referenced Prime Minister Modi’s own visit to Sri Lanka in April 2025. Modi and Disanayaka emphasized the importance of accelerating cooperation in key areas such as physical, digital, and energy connectivity. Acknowledging the crucial role of technology in achieving development goals, they also shared insights on the integration of Artificial Intelligence into their collaborative efforts.
During their discussions, President Disanayaka expressed deep appreciation for India’s prompt and unconditional assistance after Cyclone Ditwah struck Sri Lanka. He highlighted India’s role as the First Responder, which involved delivering emergency relief supplies and conducting search and rescue missions under ‘Operation Sagar Bandhu’. The leaders noted progress in India’s ongoing support for Sri Lanka’s reconstruction efforts, facilitated by a USD 450 million assistance package.
The dialogue also touched upon the recent success of the Exposition of the Holy Devnimori relics in Sri Lanka. Both leaders agreed that the strong civilizational ties between India and Sri Lanka provide a unique advantage for their partnership.
