Ministry of Ayush Observes 10th National Ayurveda Day at AIIA Goa with Theme “Ayurveda for People and Planet”

The Ministry of Ayush celebrated the 10th National Ayurveda Day at the All India Institute of Ayurveda (AIIA) in Goa, highlighting the global growth and significance of Ayurveda as a holistic healthcare system. Dignitaries including Goa’s Governor Ashok Gajapati Raju and Chief Minister Pramod Sawant attended the event, which emphasized the theme “Ayurveda for People and Planet.” The celebration showcased various initiatives aimed at promoting Ayurveda’s integration into modern healthcare and enhancing its accessibility.

Global Recognition of Ayurveda

During the event, Governor Ashok Gajapati Raju noted the remarkable evolution of Ayurveda Day from a national observance to a global health movement, with over 150 countries now participating. He praised the theme for this year, linking it to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals and emphasizing the need to preserve Ayurvedic knowledge while utilizing digital platforms for better accessibility. Raju highlighted Goa’s potential as a global hub for Ayurveda-based wellness tourism and called for the scientific validation of Ayurvedic therapies to enhance their credibility and effectiveness.

The Governor also mentioned the establishment of the Integrative Oncology Unit at AIIA Goa, a collaboration with the Tata Memorial Centre. This initiative aims to combine traditional Ayurvedic practices with modern oncology, providing a comprehensive approach to cancer care. Raju stressed the importance of integrating local biodiversity and medicinal plants into Ayurveda, which could stimulate employment and bolster the regional economy.

Ayurveda’s Role in Modern Health Challenges

Chief Minister Pramod Sawant addressed the contemporary relevance of Ayurveda in combating lifestyle-related disorders such as obesity and diabetes. He emphasized the importance of traditional practices like Dinacharya (daily routine) and Ritucharya (seasonal regimen) as sustainable models for preventive healthcare. Sawant echoed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s concerns regarding rising obesity rates and highlighted Ayurveda’s potential in offering effective solutions through detoxification, balanced diets, herbal medicines, and yoga.

The Chief Minister also pointed out Goa’s rich biodiversity, particularly in the Western Ghats and coastal regions, which host many medicinal plants referenced in Ayurvedic texts. He announced a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Government of Goa, Tata Memorial Centre, and AIIA Goa to establish an Integrative Oncology Centre. This collaboration aims to merge traditional and modern medicine, enhancing patient outcomes and promoting holistic healing.

Innovative Initiatives and Future Directions

Union Minister of State for Ayush, Prataprao Jadhav, highlighted the growing global recognition of Ayurveda as a holistic healthcare system. He marked the decision to fix September 23 as the permanent date for Ayurveda Day as a historic move, symbolizing balance in nature, which is central to Ayurvedic philosophy. Jadhav discussed the success of the “Desh ka Swasthya Parikshan Abhiyan,” launched last year, which saw over 1.29 crore citizens participating in health assessments based on Ayurvedic principles.

He noted that this initiative set five Guinness World Records and paved the way for data-driven Ayurvedic research. Jadhav emphasized the Ministry’s commitment to integrating traditional knowledge with modern healthcare to develop predictive and preventive medical solutions. He also encouraged researchers and practitioners to adopt an evidence-based approach to Ayurveda.

Celebrating Ayurveda’s Heritage and Future

The event included the unveiling of several new initiatives, such as the nationwide health assessment campaign and the launch of the DRAVYA portal, aimed at digitizing Ayurvedic substances. These initiatives are designed to improve accessibility to Ayurvedic knowledge and enhance community health assessments.

Additionally, the inauguration featured the opening of new facilities at AIIA Goa, including the Integrative Oncology Unit, and the signing of various MoUs for academic and research collaborations. The event also celebrated the launch of the Ran-Bhaji Utsav, honoring forest vegetables integral to Ayurvedic diets, and conferred the National Dhanwantari Ayurveda Awards 2025 to notable contributors in the field.

The presence of esteemed dignitaries, including members of the legislative assembly and representatives from the World Health Organization, underscored the commitment to advancing Ayurveda on both national and international platforms. The 10th National Ayurveda Day marks a significant step in promoting Ayurveda as a vital component of healthcare in India and beyond, with a focus on innovation, research, and public engagement.
