Mera Gaon Meri Dharohar Scheme

A significant initiative has been launched in India to document and preserve the cultural heritage of its villages through the MGMD (Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act) portal. Out of approximately 650,000 villages identified nationwide, data for around 470,000 villages has already been uploaded. In Tamil Nadu, 14,251 of the 19,219 villages have been mapped. The program emphasizes the unique cultural practices of each village, although it currently lacks economic benefits for the local communities.
MGMD Portal Overview
The MGMD portal serves as a comprehensive platform aimed at documenting the rich cultural heritage of villages across India. It takes into account various aspects such as linguistic diversity, cultural practices, and heritage, including traditional arts and temple architecture. In Tamil Nadu, the portal highlights local traditions like Siddha medicine and various folk arts. This initiative not only aims to preserve these practices but also to promote them through digital means, making them accessible to a wider audience.
The portal also features a crowdsourcing option, allowing local communities to actively participate in the documentation process. Villagers are encouraged to submit and validate cultural information about their own villages, fostering a sense of ownership and pride in their heritage. This participatory approach is designed to enhance the richness of the data collected and ensure that it accurately reflects the unique characteristics of each village.
Data Upload Progress
As of now, the MGMD portal has successfully uploaded data for approximately 470,000 villages out of the total 650,000 identified across India. In Tamil Nadu, 14,251 villages have been mapped and their data uploaded, representing a significant portion of the state’s total of 19,219 villages. Detailed state-wise and district-wise information is available in the annexures provided by the government.
The initiative is part of a broader effort by the Government of India to promote cultural tourism and raise awareness about the diverse heritage found in rural areas. However, despite the progress made in data collection and documentation, there are currently no specific economic or skill development benefits extended to the villagers under this initiative.
Government Initiatives and Future Plans
The Government of India is actively working to promote heritage villages through various means, including cultural tourism and educational initiatives. These efforts aim to encourage participation in cultural events and showcase traditional art forms. Digital platforms are being utilized to create awareness and reach a broader audience, thereby enhancing the visibility of rural heritage.
Despite these initiatives, there is no specific program exclusively targeting the villages of Tamil Nadu. The government has emphasized the importance of cultural preservation and the role of local communities in this process. However, the lack of direct economic benefits raises questions about the long-term sustainability of such initiatives and their impact on local livelihoods.
