Meet the Bangladeshi Umpire Overseeing the India vs New Zealand First ODI

Tensions have escalated between the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) following Kolkata Knight Riders’ (KKR) decision to drop fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman from their squad for the 2026 IPL season. Despite acquiring him for Rs 9.2 crore at the mini auction, KKR’s choice has led to Bangladesh banning IPL broadcasts within its borders for the first time since the league’s inception in 2008. In response to safety concerns, the BCB has also announced that it will not send its team to India for the upcoming T20 World Cup, pending a response from the International Cricket Council (ICC).

Bangladesh’s Reaction to Mustafizur’s Exclusion

The decision by KKR to exclude Mustafizur Rahman has sparked significant backlash in Bangladesh. The BCB’s immediate response was to halt all broadcasts of the IPL, marking a historic moment as this is the first time such a ban has been enforced since the league began in 2008. The board’s actions reflect the deepening rift between the two cricketing nations, as they express dissatisfaction with how their players are treated in the Indian league. The BCB’s stance highlights the importance of player representation and the implications of franchise decisions on international relations in cricket.

Furthermore, the BCB has raised serious concerns regarding the safety of its players in India. They have cited a thorough assessment of the current situation, which has led them to decide against sending their team for the T20 World Cup. The board is awaiting feedback from the ICC regarding their safety concerns, which adds another layer of complexity to the ongoing situation. The BCB’s actions underscore the potential impact of franchise decisions on national teams and their participation in international tournaments.

Sharfuddoula’s Role in the ODI Series

Amidst the tensions between the BCCI and BCB, Bangladeshi umpire Sharfuddoula is officiating in the first ODI match of the series between India and New Zealand, taking place in Vadodara. His appointment as the TV umpire is significant, as it showcases the talent and recognition of Bangladeshi officials on an international stage. Sharfuddoula has an impressive track record, having officiated in 32 Tests, 118 ODIs, and 75 T20Is, along with numerous women’s matches.

Born in Dhaka, Sharfuddoula began his career as a left-arm spinner before transitioning to umpiring. He made his international debut in 2010 and has since gained recognition for his expertise. Notably, he became the second Bangladeshi umpire to serve as a neutral umpire in a Test match during the Australia vs. West Indies Test in Brisbane in 2024. His inclusion in the ICC Elite Panel of Umpires in March 2024 further solidifies his status as a prominent figure in the cricketing community.

ICC Regulations on Umpire Appointments

The appointment of umpires for ODI matches follows strict regulations set by the ICC. According to these guidelines, one umpire must be appointed from the ICC’s Elite or International Panel and cannot be from the same country as the participating teams. This ensures impartiality and fairness in officiating. Additionally, the home board is responsible for appointing one umpire from its own Elite or International Panel.

In matches where the Decision Review System (DRS) is utilized, the ICC appoints a third umpire who also acts as the emergency on-field umpire. This third umpire must also be from a different country than the teams involved. These regulations are designed to maintain the integrity of the game and ensure that all matches are officiated by qualified individuals who can uphold the standards of international cricket.
