Manoj Bajpayee, Boman Irani, and Divya Dutta’s ‘Last Man in Tower’ Set to Premiere on Zee5 Hindi This November 6
Manoj Bajpayee, Boman Irani, and Divya Dutta are set to captivate audiences with their performances in the upcoming film “Last Man in Tower,” which will premiere on Hindi Zee 5 on November 6. Directed by Ben Rekhi and produced by Rana Daggubati’s Spirit Media, this Hindi drama is adapted from Aravind Adiga’s acclaimed novel of the same name. The film delves into the complexities of life in a Mumbai housing society where redevelopment sparks conflict among residents.
Conflict in a Mumbai Housing Society
“Last Man in Tower” unfolds in a Mumbai housing society where the push for redevelopment creates tension among the residents. Manoj Bajpayee portrays Yogesh Mishra, a retired physics teacher who stands firm against the redevelopment plan, refusing to vacate his apartment despite the lucrative offers accepted by his neighbors. His decision leads to a clash with those he once considered friends, highlighting the personal stakes involved in the conflict.
The narrative explores the various motivations behind the residents’ support for redevelopment, revealing the emotional and social ramifications of such decisions. Divya Dutta plays Sangita Puri, a housewife whose aspirations for a better life for her special-needs son put her at odds with Yogesh. Meanwhile, Boman Irani takes on the role of developer Dharmen Shah, who is determined to advance the redevelopment project.
Manoj Bajpayee on His Character
Manoj Bajpayee expressed his fascination with the complexity of his character, Yogesh Mishra. He stated, “What drew me to Last Man in Tower was the complexity of Yogesh Mishra. He is a man who stands firmly by his beliefs, yet the story leaves you questioning whether he is right or wrong. As an actor, I found that ambiguity fascinating because it allowed me to explore the many layers of a character who is stubborn, vulnerable and deeply attached to his home and the memories it holds.”
Bajpayee also connected the film’s themes to the ongoing changes in Mumbai’s landscape. He remarked, “In a city like Mumbai, where redevelopment has become part of everyday life and familiar buildings are constantly making way for new ones, the film looks at the human side of this change – what it means for families, the memories they leave behind and the uncertainty or excitement of starting afresh.”
Divya Dutta on Character Motivations
Divya Dutta shared her thoughts on the film’s nuanced portrayal of character motivations. She said, “What drew me to Last Man in Tower was the way it explores human behaviour and the choices people make without viewing them through a simple lens of right and wrong. Everyone has their own circumstances, aspirations and reasons for acting the way they do, which makes the conflict deeply relatable.”
Dutta also reflected on the audience’s response to her character, acknowledging that while some may not agree with her actions, they can understand her motivations. “While audiences may not have agreed with her aggression, they understood where she was coming from and what shaped her choices. As an actor, knowing that people could connect with her, even when they didn’t necessarily agree with her, is incredibly rewarding,” she noted.
Director Ben Rekhi on the Adaptation
Director Ben Rekhi described the journey of bringing “Last Man in Tower” to life as deeply fulfilling. He praised the collaboration among the cast and creative team, stating, “It’s been a deeply fulfilling experience bringing Last Man in Tower to life with an incredible team top to bottom, from Rana Daggubati producing, to Sooni Taraporevala scripting, all based on Aravind Adiga’s incredible book.”
Rekhi highlighted the significance of the film’s themes, noting the powerful performances of Bajpayee and Irani. “The most rewarding part has been witnessing the power of Manoj and Boman – two giants of cinema – working together for the first time in this film. Last Man in Tower is an urgent story about holding onto community and family through turbulent times, a story that has only become more relevant with time,” he added.
Producer Rana Daggubati emphasized the film’s focus on human choices and attachments. He remarked, “Last Man in Tower is a deeply human story. There is something very compelling about the way it explores the choices we make and the things we hold on to. The entire ensemble of cast led by Manoj, Divya, Boman bring an incredible depth to their characters.”
