‘Make in India’ Initiative Strengthens Defence Sector with Advanced BrahMos Version
India and Russia are advancing their defense collaboration with plans to manufacture an upgraded version of the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile. This initiative follows the missile’s successful deployment during India’s Operation Sindoor against Pakistan. The new manufacturing unit in Uttar Pradesh has been designated for this project, which aims to enhance India’s defense capabilities through local production. Preliminary discussions between the two nations have already begun, with Russia offering technical support for the co-production of this advanced missile.
BrahMos Missile’s Operational Success
The BrahMos missile has demonstrated its formidable capabilities, proving to be unassailable by existing air defense systems, including those used by both Chinese and Pakistani military forces. This supersonic missile can travel a distance of 300 kilometers in just a few minutes, making it a significant threat to enemy installations, particularly runways. India has developed various configurations of the BrahMos, including land-to-land, land-to-ship, and ship-to-land variants.
During Operation Sindoor, BrahMos missiles were launched from SU-30 MKI aircraft, successfully targeting the northern command and control network at the Nur Khan airbase. The establishment of a new BrahMos Aerospace facility in Lucknow, built on 80 hectares of land provided by the government, marks a significant investment of ₹300 crore. This facility includes a primary production unit and seven auxiliary facilities, aimed at enhancing India’s missile production capabilities.
Investment in Defense Manufacturing
The recent developments in the defense sector align with India’s broader ‘Make in India’ initiative, which seeks to reduce reliance on foreign defense imports and bolster domestic manufacturing. In 2018, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the creation of two Defense Industrial Corridors, one in Uttar Pradesh and another in Tamil Nadu. These corridors are designed to attract investment and promote local manufacturing of defense equipment.
Within the Uttar Pradesh Defense Industrial Corridor, 57 investors have secured land allocations, leading to the establishment of various manufacturing units at different stages of development. This initiative represents a total investment of ₹9,462.8 crore and is expected to generate direct employment for approximately 13,736 individuals. Since the initial land lease agreement in June 2021, the corridor has made substantial progress, with numerous industries actively setting up their facilities in under four years.
