Mahela Jayawardene Clarifies the Use of Concussion Substitutes for Shoulder Injuries

A controversial incident overshadowed the IPL 2026 match between Mumbai Indians (MI) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at Wankhede Stadium, where MI suffered a 103-run defeat. The focus shifted to MI’s decision to use Shardul Thakur as a concussion substitute for Mitchell Santner, who was injured while attempting a catch. Despite Sanju Samson’s impressive century and Akeal Hosein’s four-wicket haul leading CSK to victory, the legitimacy of the concussion substitute raised eyebrows among fans and analysts alike.

Shardul Thakur’s Introduction: MI’s Justification

Mitchell Santner sustained an injury during the 17th over of the match while making a low catch, which appeared to affect his shoulder. However, replays indicated that he may have also hit his head on the ground. Following the incident, Santner was taken for scans and did not return to the field. MI head coach Mahela Jayawardene addressed the ensuing controversy, explaining that Santner’s injury warranted the use of a concussion substitute.

Jayawardene stated, “Santner hit his head first, the neck and obviously, the shoulder as well. He then went for a scan. Once he got back, he was lying down. Yes, the ice was there for the shoulder, but he felt that he wasn’t stable, so we took him for a scan in that situation.” He emphasized that the decision to request a concussion substitute was made with the match referee and umpires’ approval. Despite his defense, many questioned whether Santner’s visible shoulder injury justified the use of a concussion replacement, sparking debate among fans and analysts.

Controversy Surrounding Concussion Rules

The IPL has established rules regarding concussion substitutes, requiring teams to nominate potential replacements before the match. These substitutes must be like-for-like, covering roles such as batter, bowler, or all-rounder. The final decision rests with the match referee, who ensures compliance with these guidelines. However, the optics of Santner wearing a shoulder sling after the incident raised concerns about the appropriateness of the concussion substitute used.

Critics pointed out that the visible nature of Santner’s shoulder injury could undermine the integrity of the concussion substitute rule. The situation has led to widespread discussions about the need for clearer guidelines and stricter enforcement of the rules surrounding player safety and substitutions. As the debate continues, it remains to be seen how the IPL will address these concerns moving forward.

Mumbai Indians’ Struggles Persist

Beyond the controversy, MI faced another disappointing performance in the tournament. With only four points from seven matches, Jayawardene expressed his disappointment over the team’s struggles. He noted, “We lost our rhythm in the two powerplays itself, first with the ball and then with the bat… As a team we all have to improve.”

Reflecting on the decision to chase CSK’s total, Jayawardene mentioned that the team felt comfortable with their strategy, but acknowledged that it did not pay off this time. Despite the setbacks, he highlighted the potential of young player Allah Ghazanfar, stating, “He is very brave and maturing with time… we will keep backing him.” As CSK celebrated their victory and climbed the table, MI was left to grapple not only with the defeat but also with the fallout from a decision that has ignited one of the season’s most significant debates.
