Made-in-India iPhones Challenge China’s iPhone Manufacturing Hub

A recent report indicates that Apple’s increasing focus on manufacturing iPhones in India is beginning to challenge the long-standing dominance of China’s “iPhone City.” According to Le Monde, the shift is impacting Foxconn’s massive Zhengzhou plant, which is facing declining labor numbers, stricter regulations, and a reduction in seasonal workers. Meanwhile, India is rapidly expanding its production capabilities, absorbing work that was once exclusive to China.

The Decline of Zhengzhou’s Workforce

For over a decade, Foxconn’s Zhengzhou factory has been the epicenter of iPhone assembly, employing around 300,000 workers during peak production months. Each year, the factory ramps up its workforce significantly from August to November in anticipation of the September iPhone launch. Traditionally, Foxconn has relied on temporary workers to meet this demand, hiring tens of thousands at a time. For instance, in August 2024, the company recruited approximately 50,000 temporary staff for the iPhone 16 series.

However, this reliance on temporary labor has come under scrutiny. Chinese law limits temporary workers to 10% of a company’s total workforce. Reports from China Labor Watch indicate that over half of Foxconn’s employees at the Zhengzhou plant are temporary hires, which violates this regulation. This model has faced criticism for fostering unstable employment, poor working conditions, and frequent unrest, including protests over wages and bonuses. The base monthly wage at the plant is around $295, significantly lower than the average in Zhengzhou, compelling Foxconn to offer substantial seasonal bonuses that can exceed $1,300 per month during peak times. This creates a cycle where workers are drawn in for a few months but leave once production slows.

India’s Rise as a Manufacturing Hub

In contrast to the challenges faced by the Zhengzhou plant, Apple is rapidly increasing its production in India. Currently, about 20% of all iPhones are manufactured in India, a figure that has surged in 2024 and 2025. This shift is part of Apple’s strategy to diversify its supply chains and mitigate risks associated with tariffs imposed on Chinese goods. The Indian government has actively promoted local manufacturing through incentives and the establishment of new factories by companies like Foxconn, Pegatron, and Tata Electronics.

As new factories open in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, India is gradually taking on production tasks that were once the sole domain of Zhengzhou. While China continues to be Apple’s primary production base, the emergence of India as a significant manufacturing hub marks a pivotal shift in the iPhone supply chain landscape. This transition not only reflects Apple’s strategic adjustments but also highlights the changing dynamics of global manufacturing.

The Future of iPhone Production

The ongoing changes in iPhone production underscore a broader trend of companies seeking to reduce their dependence on China. As Apple continues to expand its manufacturing footprint in India, the implications for the global supply chain could be profound. The decline in workforce numbers at the Zhengzhou plant, coupled with the rise of India’s manufacturing capabilities, suggests a significant reconfiguration of where and how iPhones are produced.

This shift may also influence labor practices and economic conditions in both countries. As India positions itself as a key player in the global tech manufacturing arena, it could lead to increased investment and job creation in the region. Meanwhile, the challenges faced by Foxconn in China may prompt the company to reevaluate its operational strategies and labor practices to adapt to the evolving landscape of global manufacturing.
