The ongoing liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) crisis affecting factories across India is showing signs of improvement as the government increases the availability of commercial LPG. Following a recent decision to boost allocations by 20 percentage points, supplies have risen to 70% of pre-crisis levels. This development comes as migrant workers return to their jobs, aided by companies providing meals and alternative cooking solutions. Key sectors such as steel, automobiles, textiles, dyes, chemicals, and plastics have been prioritized due to their labor-intensive nature and interconnections with other industries.

Government Measures to Enhance LPG Availability

The Indian government has taken significant steps to address the LPG supply crisis that has impacted various industries. By increasing the allocation of commercial LPG, the government aims to stabilize production and support sectors that rely heavily on this resource. Industry experts have noted that the availability of LPG has improved, with many companies reporting a shift from a one- to two-day supply visibility to about a week. Kamal Nandi, head of the appliances business at Godrej Enterprises, emphasized that production is now running at full capacity without issues related to labor or raw materials. This positive trend is crucial for industries such as automobiles and electronics, where LPG is essential for processes like brazing and paint shop operations.

The enhanced LPG supply is particularly beneficial for labor-intensive sectors like automobiles and food processing. Executives from these industries have observed a reduction in supply constraints, especially among smaller vendors. Larger manufacturers have successfully mitigated disruptions by exploring alternative fuel options. The inclusion of automobiles as a priority sector has been highlighted as a significant advantage. Mayank Shah, vice president at Parle Products, noted that improved LPG availability is allowing previously affected plants to return to optimal production levels. He also mentioned that there is a push for the government to recognize packaged foods as a priority sector to further support the industry.

Workforce Retention and Attendance Recovery

As the LPG supply situation stabilizes, companies are implementing strategies to retain their workforce. Many firms have introduced canteen meals to reduce reliance on LPG for cooking, which has helped improve attendance levels. Previously, supply disruptions led to increased absenteeism among migrant workers, who faced challenges accessing food due to rising black market prices and the closure of small eateries. To counter this, some companies are offering incentives of up to Rs 5,000 to offset higher LPG costs and encourage workers to stay. A senior executive in the auto components sector reported that attendance has returned to normal levels, reflecting the effectiveness of these measures.

Future Outlook for LPG Supply

Looking ahead, industry leaders are optimistic about the recovery of LPG supplies. Ajay DD Singhania, chief executive of Epack Durable, indicated that supplies have rebounded to nearly 60% of normal levels and are expected to reach around 80% soon. While companies have adapted to a new normal of daily follow-ups to secure LPG supplies, the overall situation is improving. The return of the migrant workforce has also been facilitated by companies providing meals or cooking support, further stabilizing operations. Despite the production losses experienced over the past few weeks, the outlook for LPG availability and industrial operations appears to be on an upward trajectory.
