Live Updates on Railway Budget 2026: Key Focus Areas
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is poised to unveil a record capital expenditure allocation for Indian Railways in the upcoming Union Budget 2026. This follows a trend of substantial increases in railway budget allocations over the past five years, reflecting the government’s commitment to infrastructure as a key driver of economic growth. Since the separation of the Railway Budget from the Finance Ministry in 2017, railway allocations have been integrated into the broader budget speech, focusing on future projects, passenger services, freight, and safety enhancements.
Introduction of Vande Bharat Sleeper Trains
Earlier this year, Indian Railways launched its first Vande Bharat sleeper train service, connecting Guwahati and Howrah. This new semi-high-speed train, capable of reaching speeds of 160 km/h, aims to transform the overnight travel experience for passengers. The introduction of Vande Bharat sleeper trains is expected to continue, with hundreds more planned for rollout in the coming years. In her budget speech, FM Sitharaman may outline further developments regarding these sleeper services.
The Vande Bharat sleeper trains promise world-class comfort, offering superior ride quality compared to existing premium services like the Rajdhani Express and Tejas Express. Key features include cushioned berths, redesigned ladders, and a range of passenger-friendly amenities, including facilities for disabled travelers. The trains are designed to provide a faster, smoother travel experience, minimizing discomfort during journeys. As of December 2025, a total of 164 Vande Bharat train services are operational across the Indian Railways network, highlighting their growing popularity among travelers.
Expansion of Amrit Bharat Trains
The Amrit Bharat trains are designed as push-pull services, featuring locomotives at both ends to enhance speed and efficiency. Currently, these trains are equipped with sleeper and general coaches, with plans to introduce air-conditioned coaches in the near future. Presently, Amrit Bharat services consist of fully non-AC trains, which include 12 Sleeper Class Coaches and 8 General Class coaches, providing quality services that mirror those of the Vande Bharat trains.
The focus of Amrit Bharat trains is on affordability and accessibility for the common man. As the government continues to prioritize passenger services, announcements regarding new Amrit Bharat train routes and services may be expected in the upcoming budget. These developments aim to enhance the travel experience for a broader segment of the population, ensuring that high-quality rail services are available to all.
Enhancements in Safety with Kavach System
Indian Railways has recently made significant strides in safety with the commissioning of 472.3 route kilometers of the Kavach Version 4.0 system. Kavach is India’s indigenous Automatic Train Protection system, designed to enhance railway safety through advanced technology. This latest version has been developed based on operational feedback, field experience, and independent safety evaluations, marking a significant advancement in railway safety measures.
The Kavach system employs a combination of microprocessor-based architecture, GPS technology, and radio communication to ensure safe train operations. It is designed to alert locomotive pilots when another train is detected on the same track within a defined safety distance. If necessary, the system can automatically engage the brakes to prevent collisions. Given the emphasis on safety in railway operations, it is likely that FM Sitharaman will highlight the Kavach rollout in her budget speech, underscoring the government’s commitment to improving safety standards across the rail network.
