Launch of Logo Design Competition for “Empowering Consumers through Repairability Index”

Encouraging public participation in the mission of repair, the Department of Consumer Affairs has launched a Logo Design Competition focused on the theme of “Empowering Consumers through Repairability Index.” In collaboration with MyGov and the Chair on Consumer Law at National Law University Delhi, this initiative aims to gather innovative ideas from citizens nationwide. The competition seeks to enhance public engagement while promoting the Right to Repair framework, which empowers consumers and aims to reduce electronic waste.

Objectives of the Repairability Index Framework

The Department of Consumer Affairs has previously developed the “Right to Repair through Repairability Index Framework.” This framework is designed to empower consumers by providing them with transparent information about product repairability, ultimately allowing them to make informed choices and reduce e-waste. By enabling consumers to repair their products at a lower cost, the initiative aims to shift the focus from purchasing new items to maintaining existing ones.

The proposed logo will serve multiple purposes: it will visibly indicate a product’s Repairability Index rating, symbolize the core principles of the Right to Repair and the circular economy, and act as a certification mark that consumers can easily recognize. This logo will visually represent India’s commitment to transitioning toward a circular economy, promoting responsible consumption and consumer empowerment.

Focus Areas and Benefits

The initial focus of the Repairability Index Framework includes critical sectors such as farming equipment, mobile phones and tablets, consumer durables, and automobiles. The Department has initiated a comprehensive strategy to enhance consumer rights, promote sustainable consumption, and strengthen the circular economy. By improving the lifespan, maintenance, reusability, recyclability, and waste management of appliances, the framework aims to save consumers money while contributing to environmental sustainability.

The overarching goal is to empower consumers with a genuine sense of ownership over their purchases. This aligns with the LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment) movement, which advocates for mindful and deliberate consumption. To facilitate these objectives, the “Right to Repair Portal India” was launched on National Consumer Rights Day, December 24, 2022. This digital platform serves as a resource for consumers, manufacturers, and third-party repairers, providing essential information related to repairs.

Competition Details and Participation

The Logo Design Competition is open to all Indian citizens aged 16 and above as of November 1, 2025. Participants are encouraged to submit original logo designs along with a brief concept note explaining their design idea and its relevance to the theme. Entries must be uploaded in the specified format via the MyGov portal by November 30, 2025, at 23:45 IST. The winning entry will receive a cash prize of ₹25,000, and the selected logo may be officially adopted as the emblem for the Repairability Index framework.

The Department of Consumer Affairs invites creative individuals, designers, students, and innovators from across India to take part in this national initiative. The competition aims to visually represent the country’s shift towards responsible consumption and sustainable living, encouraging a collective effort in promoting the Right to Repair.

Background and Development of the Initiative

In July 2022, the Department established a high-level committee to develop a comprehensive National Framework for the Right to Repair. The “Right to Repair Portal India” was launched on December 24, 2022, as part of this initiative. In March 2024, the Department held a meeting with companies from key sectors, including automobiles and consumer electronics, to onboard them onto the portal. During this meeting, challenges such as limited availability of spare parts and high repair costs were identified as barriers to consumer repair rights.

Subsequent meetings focused on the need to democratize access to repair manuals and videos, enabling third-party repairers, and developing a repairability index for automotive products. A National Workshop was held in August 2024 to establish consensus among industry stakeholders on key parameters for a Repairability Index, promoting product longevity and enhancing consumer access to repair information.

The committee submitted its report on May 3, 2025, recommending that smartphones and tablets be the first product categories covered under the Repairability Index framework. The proposed index will assess products based on six core parameters, including the availability of repair information and spare parts. By implementing this framework, the initiative aims to empower consumers and facilitate informed choices in the marketplace.
