Launch of AwaasPlus App Under PMAY-G

The Ministry of Rural Development is advancing its efforts to provide housing for rural households through the Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G). Launched on April 1, 2016, the initiative aims to construct durable homes equipped with essential amenities. Initially set to build 2.95 crore houses by 2023-24, the government has now extended the program to include an additional 2 crore houses from 2024-25 to 2028-29. A new survey is underway to identify more eligible households, utilizing innovative technology to streamline the process.

Expansion of Housing Initiatives

The PMAY-G program has been a cornerstone of the Indian government’s commitment to achieving “Housing for All” in rural areas. The initial target of constructing 2.95 crore houses was ambitious, covering the fiscal years from 2016-17 to 2023-24. However, recognizing the ongoing need for housing, the government has approved an extension of the scheme through 2028-29, with a goal of building an additional 2 crore homes. This expansion reflects the government’s dedication to improving living conditions in rural regions and ensuring that more families have access to safe and secure housing.

Innovative Survey Methods

To facilitate the identification of eligible households, the Ministry is implementing a new survey process. States and Union Territories will utilize the Awaas+ 2024 mobile application, which incorporates eKYC face-based authentication. This app allows for both assisted surveys by pre-registered surveyors and a self-survey option for eligible households. The application also enables users to select housing typologies and captures essential data, including the condition of existing homes and geo-tagged photos of proposed construction sites. The app’s functionality in both online and offline modes ensures accessibility for users in remote areas.

Technological Advancements in PMAY-G

The PMAY-G initiative is leveraging advanced technology to enhance its operations and prevent fraud. The Awaas+ 2024 app includes features such as a recommendation system that analyzes house attributes from uploaded photos to recommend final approvals. Additionally, an anomaly detection module calculates similarity scores between inspected houses and others in the vicinity to identify potential fraudulent activities. The integration of Aadhaar for e-KYC verification, along with AI-enabled face authentication, further strengthens the program’s integrity. The app also includes a liveliness detection feature to ensure accurate identification of beneficiaries.

Support Applications for Beneficiaries

In addition to the Awaas+ 2024 app, the Ministry has developed AwaasSAKHI, a mobile application designed to consolidate vital information and resources related to PMAY-G. This innovative tool aims to streamline access to the program, making it easier for beneficiaries to navigate the application process and understand their entitlements. The introduction of these technological solutions underscores the government’s commitment to transparency and efficiency in delivering housing assistance to rural households. This information was shared by Minister of State for Rural Development, Shri Dr. Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani, in a written response in the Lok Sabha.
