Khet Bachao Abhiyan Launched to Safeguard Agriculture
In a significant move towards enhancing agricultural sustainability in India, Union Minister for Agriculture, Farmers Welfare, and Rural Development, Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan, has inaugurated the ‘Khet Bachao Abhiyan’ at Ramasiya village in Raisen district, Madhya Pradesh. This nationwide initiative aims to underscore the importance of soil health in boosting agricultural productivity and strengthening the livelihood of farmers. Shri Chouhan emphasized that a healthy soil leads to prosperous farming, which ultimately benefits the entire nation.
Campaign Focus and Objectives
The month-long campaign, running from June 1 to June 30, seeks to create awareness about soil health and sustainable farming practices. During the launch, Shri Chouhan highlighted the collective responsibility to protect the Earth, urging farmers to minimize the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. Instead, he encouraged the application of fertilizers based on thorough soil testing, ensuring that nutrients are tailored to the specific needs of the land. He warned against the excessive use of chemicals, noting that they diminish soil fertility and disrupt beneficial microorganisms, which are vital for agricultural productivity.
Community Involvement and Educational Outreach
The Khet Bachao Abhiyan will involve collaboration among agricultural scientists, experts from universities, and local officials who will visit villages to educate farmers. Interactions will focus on soil testing, balanced nutrient management, natural farming, water conservation, and advanced agricultural techniques. Shri Chouhan stressed the necessity for every farmer to possess a Soil Health Card, as this knowledge will enable them to apply fertilizers judiciously, thus reducing costs and enhancing crop yields.
Empowerment of Women and Youth
The Union Minister also linked the campaign to empowerment initiatives for women and youth. He stated that opportunities for self-employment and income-generation activities would be provided through Self-Help Groups. Eligible women will receive training and financial support to establish small enterprises, contributing to independence and improved household incomes. For the youth, Shri Chouhan noted that the campaign would offer greater access to skill development and guidance, fostering employment generation in rural areas.
Commitment to Sustainable Farming
Shri Chouhan’s vision for the campaign extends beyond immediate agricultural practices; he sees it evolving into a significant societal movement. He urged public officials to maintain regular engagement with village communities, providing ongoing technical assistance to farmers. He reiterated that the goal is to create a future where agriculture thrives through collective efforts and responsible cultivation methods.
Protection Against Counterfeit Products
The campaign will also tackle the issue of counterfeit fertilizers and pesticides, ensuring that farmers are well-informed about crop selection and agro-climatic suitability. Educational activities will include best practices for seed treatment and the use of green manure to enhance soil health, aligning with various governmental schemes aimed at supporting farmers.
At the launch event, a large crowd, including farmers, agricultural scientists, and local officials, gathered to witness the initiative. Shri Chouhan also took the opportunity to distribute nutrition kits to malnourished children, highlighting the broader objective of holistic community well-being.
