Khelo India Winter Games 2026 Kick Off in Ladakh
The sixth edition of the Khelo India Winter Games (KIWG) has officially begun at the Nawang Dorjan Stobdan (NDS) Stadium in Leh, Ladakh. This exciting event commenced on January 20 and will feature thrilling ice sports such as skating and hockey, culminating on January 26. Notably, this marks the third consecutive time that Ladakh has hosted the KIWG. The snow sports segment will take place later this year in Gulmarg, Jammu & Kashmir, expanding the event’s reach.
Celebration of Sports and Culture
The opening ceremony was a vibrant affair, showcasing traditional music and dance performances alongside an exhibition ice hockey match between the Army XI and the Union Territory of Ladakh team. The ceremony was officiated by Lt Governor of Ladakh, Shri Kavinder Gupta, who expressed pride in hosting the games and highlighted Ladakh’s growing reputation as a center for winter sports.
Government Support for Winter Sports
Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, Hon’ble Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, extended his congratulations to Ladakh for successfully hosting the KIWG. He emphasized that this initiative is vital for the development of winter sports in India, showcasing the country’s intentions of building a competitive framework for these disciplines. With the games structured as a two-legged event, athletes will benefit from diverse competitive environments, enhancing their readiness for international standards.
A Boost to Local Aspirations
During his address, Shri Gupta reflected on the transformative impact of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision on sports promotion in India. He noted that the Khelo India initiative has elevated youth empowerment and athletic excellence as national priorities. Hosting the KIWG for three consecutive years signifies the trust placed in Ladakh’s capabilities in managing such significant events.
Participation and Events
This year’s KIWG will see participation from 1,060 individuals, including 480 athletes, competing across three major venues: the revamped NDS Stadium, Gupukh’s Pond, and the Ladakh Scouts Regimental Centre rink. A highlight of this edition is the introduction of figure skating, an Olympic sport, marking a significant step for Indian athletes.
Focus on Future Sporting Excellence
Furthermore, Shri Gupta reiterated that Ladakh is rapidly advancing in sports development, backed by the introduction of its first Sports Policy. This policy aims at identifying talent from schools, promoting inclusivity for women and athletes with disabilities, and enhancing sports infrastructure. It also provides vital support such as job reservations for outstanding athletes, scholarships, and cash awards, inspiring Ladakh’s youth to pursue sports professionally.
