Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) Sets New Record

The Khadi and Village Industries sector in India has experienced remarkable growth over the past 11 years, significantly enhancing self-reliance among rural communities. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME), the sector has achieved unprecedented milestones in production, sales, and employment generation. Chairman of the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC), Manoj Kumar, recently announced these achievements while releasing provisional data for the financial year 2024-25, highlighting a substantial increase in key performance indicators.
Record Growth in Production and Sales
The KVIC has reported a staggering 447 percent increase in sales and a 347 percent rise in production over the last 11 years. In the financial year 2024-25, the production of Khadi and Village Industry products reached approximately โน116,599.75 crore, a significant jump from โน26,109.07 crore in 2013-14. Sales figures also soared, climbing to โน170,551.37 crore from โน31,154.19 crore during the same period. This growth marks the highest sales recorded to date, showcasing the sector’s robust performance and its vital role in the Indian economy.
Kumar emphasized that this success is not merely a statistical achievement but a testament to the enduring legacy of Mahatma Gandhi and the commitment of the Indian government to foster self-reliance. The substantial growth in the Khadi sector aligns with the broader vision of a ‘Viksit Bharat’ by 2047, aiming to position India as the world’s third-largest economy.
Employment Generation and Rural Development
The KVIC has also made significant strides in employment generation, with a 49.23 percent increase in job opportunities in the sector. The cumulative employment figures rose from 1.30 crore in 2013-14 to 1.94 crore in 2024-25. This growth reflects the KVIC’s commitment to creating sustainable livelihoods in rural areas. The Pradhan Mantri Employment Generation Program (PMEGP) has played a crucial role in this initiative, with over 1 million units established, providing employment to nearly 9 million individuals.
Additionally, the business of the Khadi and Village Industries Bhawan in New Delhi has seen remarkable growth, doubling its revenue from โน51.02 crore in 2013-14 to โน110.01 crore in 2024-25. This increase underscores the rising demand for Khadi products and the effectiveness of government initiatives in promoting rural entrepreneurship.
Empowering Women and Promoting Skill Development
A significant aspect of the KVIC’s achievements is its focus on women empowerment. Over the past decade, the commission has trained 743,904 individuals through various training centers, with women constituting 57.45 percent of the trainees. Furthermore, 80 percent of the 500,000 Khadi artisans are women, highlighting the sector’s role in promoting gender equality and economic independence.
Kumar noted that the wages of Khadi artisans have increased by 275 percent over the last 11 years, with a 100 percent rise in the past three years alone. This wage growth reflects the KVIC’s commitment to enhancing the livelihoods of artisans and ensuring fair compensation for their work.
Future Initiatives and Goals
Looking ahead, the KVIC aims to further expand its initiatives under the Gramodyog Vikas Yojana Scheme, which focuses on providing employment opportunities in rural areas. The budget for this scheme has been significantly increased, allowing for the distribution of various tools and equipment to support local artisans and entrepreneurs. In the last three financial years, the KVIC has distributed over 87,000 machines and equipment, contributing to the creation of a self-reliant India.
