Michael Ondaatje was born on September 12, 1943, in Colombo, British Ceylon (now Sri Lanka).
He comes from a mixed heritage, with a Sri Lankan Tamil father and a Dutch-Burgher (Eurasian) mother. Ondaatje moved to England in 1954 and then to Canada in 1962. His family settled in Toronto, where he later became a Canadian citizen.
Ondaatje attended the University of Toronto and later pursued graduate studies at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. He was influenced by modernist poets and writers, and his early works reflect his engagement with experimental literature.
