Job Cuts at TCS Impact Net Hiring Across Major IT Companies

With only 17 net hires recorded in the first nine months of the 2025-26 financial year, India’s leading IT companies are adopting a cautious approach to recruitment. This stark decline contrasts sharply with the 17,764 net additions seen during the same period last year. The shift in hiring practices reflects broader economic uncertainties and the impact of AI-driven productivity models, raising concerns among students and job seekers about future employment opportunities in the sector.

Hiring Trends Among Major IT Firms

The hiring landscape for India’s top five IT companies has changed dramatically. In the first nine months of the current financial year, the combined net additions were a mere 17, a significant drop from the previous year’s figures. Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) was the most affected, reducing its workforce by 25,816 employees after announcing a 2% cut, primarily impacting mid-level and senior executives. In contrast, Infosys, Wipro, HCLTech, and Tech Mahindra reported net additions of 13,456, 9,740, 1,885, and 752 employees, respectively. The overall trend indicates a cautious approach to hiring, with many firms relying on acquisitions to maintain headcount numbers.

During the December quarter alone, the combined workforce of these five firms decreased by 2,174 employees, primarily due to TCS’s significant reduction of 11,151 employees. While Infosys and Wipro managed to add 5,043 and 6,529 employees, respectively, the overall sentiment remains one of restraint. This shift in hiring practices is raising alarms among students and recent graduates who are entering a challenging job market.

Impact of AI and Automation

The current hiring slowdown is attributed to several factors, including the rise of AI and automation in the IT services sector. Phil Fersht, CEO of HfS Research, noted that the industry is experiencing a structural shift away from traditional growth models that relied heavily on increasing headcount. Companies are now focusing on enhancing productivity and efficiency, which reduces the need for new hires, especially at junior and mid-level positions. As clients seek to maximize their existing resources, they are pushing for greater productivity, further influencing hiring decisions.

While AI has not yet led to significant revenue growth, it is changing how companies operate. The decoupling of revenue growth from headcount expansion is becoming increasingly evident. Firms are now prioritizing skill-specific recruitment, leading to a more selective hiring process. This trend is reshaping the workforce dynamics within the IT sector, as companies adapt to new technologies and changing client expectations.

Future Outlook for IT Recruitment

Looking ahead, the outlook for IT recruitment remains uncertain. TCS has adopted a more cautious stance regarding campus hiring, refraining from announcing its usual target numbers. This shift indicates a broader trend among IT firms to rebalance their workforce, focusing on internal productivity and role consolidation rather than aggressive hiring. The overall demand for IT services is recovering slowly, with deal ramp-ups taking longer than expected and discretionary spending remaining subdued.

Industry experts suggest that the hiring environment will continue to be selective and skill-specific. As companies navigate the challenges posed by economic uncertainties and evolving technologies, the focus will likely remain on enhancing efficiency rather than expanding headcount. Ray Wang, CEO of Constellation Research, emphasized that the combination of AI-driven efficiency and changing client expectations has created a low-hire, low-fire environment, marking a new reality for the IT services industry.
