Jigyasa Program Inspires 14 Lakh Students in Scientific Exploration
In a recent address to the Rajya Sabha, Dr. Jitendra Singh, the Union Minister of State for Science and Technology, announced the substantial impact of the “Jigyasa” Student–Scientist Connect Programme, launched under the Modi government’s initiative. This program has successfully engaged over 14 lakh school children and approximately 80,000 teachers nationwide, fostering scientific curiosity and research interest among young minds.
Initiated in 2017 in partnership with the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS), the Jigyasa program immerses students in the world of science and innovation. It facilitates visits to various CSIR laboratories, interactions with seasoned scientists, and hands-on activities, ensuring that participants gain insights into scientific methods and their real-world applications. More than 3,900 activities have been conducted across 37 CSIR labs, exemplifying the wide geographical and institutional reach of this transformative initiative.
Digital Learning and Inclusivity
Dr. Singh highlighted the introduction of the “Jigyasa Virtual Lab” in collaboration with IIT Bombay in 2021. This innovative digital platform provides access to simulations, animations, and interactive learning modules, including 401 content pieces available in Indian Sign Language, promoting inclusivity for Divyangjan learners. The virtual lab significantly enhances Jigyasa’s outreach, allowing students from remote areas to experience high-quality scientific resources without traditional limitations.
Participation and Future Aspirations
The program’s achievements were underscored by the overwhelming participation in events like the “Jigyasa Vigyan Mahotsav 2022,” which featured over 30,000 participants and garnered 3,000 content submissions. In addition, the EPIC Hackathon 2024 attracted 960 applications, with 47 students gaining internships in 18 CSIR laboratories. Dr. Singh emphasized that such initiatives equip students with vital problem-solving skills and practical experiences in genuine laboratory settings.
In response to queries about the program’s finances, Dr. Jitendra Singh revealed significant budgetary allocations over the years, showing a marked increase from ₹597.10 lakh in 2021–22 to ₹1,850.00 lakh in 2025–26. This consistent funding growth reflects the government’s commitment to expanding Jigyasa’s reach and educational impact.
State Support and Future Plans
The allocation of funds to CSIR laboratories varied across states, with Maharashtra receiving the highest amounts during the last three fiscal years. Laboratories in Telangana, New Delhi, and Uttar Pradesh also secured considerable funding, ensuring comprehensive access to the program across various regions. Notably, programs like India’s first Indian Sign Language-enabled Astronomy Laboratory in Karnal illustrate Jigyasa’s dedication to inclusive education.
Additionally, the nationwide event, “One Day as a Scientist Week,” held from July 21 to 25, 2025, saw participation from nearly 14,000 students across CSIR laboratories. This initiative provided invaluable firsthand exposure to scientific research.
Dr. Jitendra Singh concluded that Jigyasa has established itself as a vital platform, sparking curiosity, fostering a scientific mindset, and encouraging young individuals to consider careers in science and research. Through hands-on learning experiences and digital innovations, the program continues to align with India’s vision of a scientifically informed and innovation-driven society.
