ISRO Celebrates 100th Launch with NVS-02 Satellite
The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) reached a remarkable milestone on Wednesday with the successful launch of the NVS-02 navigation satellite. This historic event took place aboard the GSLV-F15 rocket from Sriharikota at 6:23 am. The launch marked ISRO’s 100th mission, showcasing the agency’s commitment to advancing space technology. ISRO confirmed the successful launch through a post on X, formerly known as Twitter. The GSLV-F15 rocket, standing at 50.9 meters tall, lifted off after a precise countdown of 27.30 hours. The payload, NVS-02, is the second satellite in the second-generation NavIC series. This series aims to improve positioning, navigation, and timing services not only across India but also within a 1,500 km range beyond its borders. The first satellite in this series, NVS-01, was successfully deployed in May 2023.
NVS-02 was developed at the U R Rao Satellite Centre in Bengaluru and weighs approximately 2,250 kg. It is equipped with advanced navigation payloads that operate in the L1, L5, and S bands. The satellite features a tri-band antenna and an indigenous Rubidium Atomic Frequency Standard. This standard is crucial for achieving high-precision navigation, which is essential for various applications. The successful deployment of NVS-02 marks a significant step in enhancing India’s capabilities in satellite navigation.
Impact on Navigation and Future Missions
The NavIC system is poised to have a substantial impact on various sectors. According to ISRO, it will support applications in terrestrial, aerial, and maritime navigation. The cumulative payload capacity of these missions exceeds 120 tonnes, showcasing ISRO’s capabilities on the global stage.
