Is Sourav Ganguly the Future Chief Minister of West Bengal or Team India’s Next Head Coach?

Former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly has expressed his willingness to consider a coaching role for the Indian cricket team while firmly dismissing any political ambitions in light of the upcoming 2026 West Bengal assembly elections. In a recent podcast interview with PTI in Kolkata, Ganguly discussed his future in cricket administration and coaching, stating that he is open to new opportunities despite his past roles. He emphasized that his biggest contribution as BCCI President was promoting womenโ€™s cricket and acknowledged the progress of the current Indian coach, Gautam Gambhir.

### Ganguly’s Coaching Aspirations

During the interview, Ganguly highlighted his journey after retiring from competitive cricket in 2013, which included becoming the BCCI President and serving as Team Director for the Delhi Capitals in two separate stints. When asked about the prospect of coaching the national team, he stated, “We’ll see what the future holds. I’m just 53, so let’s see what happens. I’m open to it.” His openness to coaching reflects his enduring passion for the game and desire to contribute to Indian cricket in any capacity.

### Stance on Politics

Ganguly was unequivocal in his rejection of political aspirations. When questioned about joining a political party, he simply stated, “I am not interested.” This response remained consistent even when he was asked about potentially being offered the position of chief minister in West Bengal. His focus remains squarely on cricket, where he believes he can make a meaningful impact.

### Thoughts on Current Coaching

Ganguly shared insights on the performance of the current Indian coach, Gautam Gambhir, noting improvements in the team’s performance since the Champions Trophy victory in Dubai. He recognized Gambhir’s initial struggles against Australia and New Zealand but praised his subsequent successes. Ganguly remarked, “Gautam is doing a good job,” indicating his support for the coach as he navigates an important series against England.

### Gambhir’s Coaching Style

While Ganguly admits he hasnโ€™t closely observed Gambhirโ€™s coaching tactics, he commended the former player for his passion and transparency. “He sees things clearly, and he’s very open about what he feels,” Ganguly noted. He also reflected fondly on their shared experiences as teammates, expressing respect for Gambhir’s dedication to the role. Ganguly concluded by wishing Gambhir success in his coaching career, acknowledging that he is still early in his journey and will continue to grow and learn as a coach.
