IPL 2025: Kohli, Salt propel RCB to victory over RR

In a thrilling Indian Premier League (IPL) match on Sunday, the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) showcased their batting prowess, defeating the Rajasthan Royals (RR) by nine wickets at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur. Chasing a target of 174 runs, RCB reached their goal in just 17.3 overs, propelled by a stunning performance from Phil Salt and Virat Kohli. Salt, who scored an explosive 65 runs off 33 balls, earned the ‘Player of the Match’ award. Kohli further solidified his reputation as a chasemaster by remaining unbeaten on 62 runs. This victory kept RCB unbeaten in away matches this season and elevated them to third place in the points table.
Phil Salt’s Explosive Knock
Phil Salt set the tone for RCB’s innings with an aggressive approach from the outset. He quickly proved to be a formidable opener, scoring 65 runs off just 33 deliveries, which included five fours and six sixes. Salt’s innings was marked by a 92-run opening partnership with Kohli. His aggressive batting style caught the Rajasthan bowlers off guard, particularly during the powerplay. Notably, Salt’s performance included a six off Jofra Archer and a rapid second half-century of the tournament in just 28 balls. Despite some fortunate moments, including close calls with potential catches, Salt maintained his momentum. He narrowly escaped a difficult caught-and-bowled attempt from Sandeep Sharma and benefited from a missed catch by Yashasvi Jaiswal. However, his innings came to an end when he was dismissed by Kumar Kartikeya in the ninth over. Nevertheless, his explosive start laid a solid foundation for RCB’s successful chase.
Kohli’s Masterclass and Milestone Achievement
After Salt’s dismissal, Virat Kohli took charge of the innings with his signature composure. Kohli began cautiously, scoring only seven runs from his first six balls. However, he soon found his rhythm and crafted a brilliant innings of 62 runs off 45 balls, featuring four boundaries and two sixes. Kohli’s knock was highlighted by an unbroken 83-run partnership with Devdutt Padikkal, who contributed 40 runs from 28 balls. Kohli’s half-century was particularly significant as it marked his 100th in T20 cricket, making him the only Asian player to achieve this milestone. He celebrated this achievement in style by striking a six over the bowler’s head off Wanindu Hasaranga, helping RCB reduce their target to just 28 runs from 30 balls. His strategic shot selection and ability to rotate the strike were key components of his innings, which ultimately secured RCB’s victory.
Rajasthan Royals’ Struggles and Jaiswal’s Standout Performance
Despite the defeat, Rajasthan Royals had some bright moments, particularly from Yashasvi Jaiswal. The young batsman scored a commendable 75 runs off 47 balls, showcasing his skills on a challenging batting surface. Jaiswal’s innings included ten fours and two sixes and was crucial in helping RR reach a total of 173 runs for four wickets. He formed a significant 56-run partnership with Riyan Parag, who contributed 30 runs from 18 deliveries.
Jaiswal’s aggressive batting style stood out amidst a generally tough outing for the Royals. He executed inventive shot selections, including lap shots and reverse sweeps. However, the team’s inability to capitalize on scoring opportunities proved detrimental. Other batsmen struggled to find their footing, with captain Sanju Samson managing only 13 runs before being stumped. Dhruv Jurel ended the innings unbeaten on 35 runs, providing a late flourish, but it was not enough to secure a competitive total against RCB’s batting attack. The Royals now sit at seventh place in the points table, facing challenges as the season progresses.
