INTERVIEW I’ll be ready when opportunity arrives.

Washington Sundar Remains Positive Amid IPL Setbacks

MUMBAI: Washington Sundar, the talented off-spinning allrounder, has faced challenges in the Indian Premier League (IPL) since the introduction of the Impact Player rule in 2023. This season, Sundar participated in only two matches for Sunrisers Hyderabad and one for Gujarat Titans, where he was surprisingly benched despite scoring 49 runs off 29 balls against SRH. Undeterred, the 25-year-old is focusing on the upcoming five-Test series against England this summer, eager to prove his worth on the international stage.

Adapting to Tactical Changes in IPL

Sundar’s limited appearances in IPL 2024 reflect the tactical changes teams are making under the Impact Player rule. He acknowledged that decisions are based on specific match conditions and the opponents faced. “Everything is tactical,” he stated, emphasizing the importance of being prepared for every opportunity that arises. Despite being benched in recent matches, Sundar remains committed to improving his skills. He believes that maintaining focus and working on his game will prepare him for future chances, whether in the IPL or on the international front.

The allrounder understands the competitive nature of the league, where specialists often take precedence. “I just need to keep getting better and be in my best rhythm whenever the opportunity comes,” he said. His determination to contribute to his team’s success remains strong, and he is ready to make an impact whenever called upon.

Looking Ahead to the England Tour

With five Test matches scheduled against England, Sundar is optimistic about his chances. He described the series as a significant test for the entire team. “Itโ€™ll be amazing for us to dominate the series and go on to win,” he expressed. However, he emphasized the need to stay focused on his development in the meantime.

Sundar’s past experiences, including a memorable 123-run partnership with Shardul Thakur at the Gabba, have fueled his passion for Test cricket. He views every opportunity, including his past performances, as vital to his growth as a player. “To play for India, especially in the Test format, is a massive blessing,” he reflected, underscoring his commitment to contributing positively to the team’s success.

Coaching Influence and Competitiveness in Indian Cricket

The role of coaching has been crucial in Sundar’s journey. He credited coaches like Ashish Nehra and Gautam Gambhir for helping him understand different game situations and improve his skills. “They make you understand what you could do and how you could approach different situations,” he noted. Their guidance has provided Sundar with valuable insights, contributing to his development as a cricketer.

Sundar also highlighted the intense competition among spinners in the Indian team. He believes that surviving in such a competitive environment requires focus and preparation. “There is no competition in this game because you just need to be in your best rhythm when the opportunity comes,” he stated. His dedication to honing his skills and contributing to the team’s success is evident, as he continues to work hard in practice sessions.

As Sundar looks to the future, he remains unwavering in his commitment to cricket, ready to seize every opportunity that comes his way.
