International Delegates to Experience India’s Election Process in 2026

The Election Commission of India has launched the International Election Visitors’ Programme (IEVP) for the upcoming legislative assembly elections in Assam, Kerala, and Puducherry. The inauguration took place today in New Delhi, featuring remarks from Chief Election Commissioner Shri Gyanesh Kumar and other Election Commissioners Dr. S.S. Sandhu and Dr. Vivek Joshi.

Describing elections in India as ‘festivals of democracy,’ CEC Gyanesh Kumar emphasized the importance of these democratic practices and encouraged the visiting delegates to immerse themselves in India’s rich cultural diversity during their stay. Participants will have the opportunity to observe and learn about India’s electoral systems and processes firsthand.

Programme Details and Schedule

The IEVP will unfold in two phases. The first phase will see delegates visiting Assam, Kerala, and Puducherry from April 8 to 9, 2026. Following this, the second phase will commence on April 20, 2026, with visits to West Bengal and Tamil Nadu.

International Representation

This year’s programme will include 43 delegates from 23 different countries, with representatives from five foreign missions based in Delhi. These international guests will gain firsthand insight into India’s election process, including demonstrations on the use of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) at the India International Institute for Democracy and Election Management (IIIDEM).

Engagement and Learning Opportunities

The delegates will engage in an interactive session with experts to clarify any queries regarding the election process. They are scheduled to visit key facilities such as dispatch and distribution centers, District Control Rooms, and Media Monitoring Centres. A highlight of their trip will be witnessing the actual polling on the morning of April 9, 2026.

Flagship Initiative for Global Cooperation

The IEVP represents a flagship initiative by the Election Commission of India aimed at fostering international cooperation and enhancing engagement with Election Management Bodies (EMBs) from across the globe. It provides a comprehensive overview of India’s electoral framework, showcasing best practices and innovative approaches to election management.
