Inter-Cultural Tourism Initiatives Between Northeast Region and Southern India

The Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) has made significant strides in enhancing regional air connectivity through its Regional Connectivity Scheme, Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik (RCS-UDAN), launched on October 21, 2016. This initiative aims to improve access to unserved and underserved airports across India, making air travel more affordable for the general public. Additionally, the scheme has operationalized 53 tourism routes, particularly benefiting the North Eastern Region and Southern India, thereby promoting tourism and cultural exchange.
Enhancing Air Connectivity
The RCS-UDAN initiative has successfully operationalized a total of 90 routes in the North Eastern Region (NER), connecting ten airports and two heliports. This expansion aims to bolster tourism and improve accessibility to various destinations. Although there is currently no direct air connectivity between the North Eastern airports and those in Southern India, travelers can still access these regions through connecting flights. The scheme is supported by 100% Viability Gap Funding (VGF) from the Ministry of Tourism, which facilitates direct air links to popular tourist destinations and cultural sites across the country.
Tourism Initiatives and Cultural Exchange
The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has reported that 17 trips of Bharat Gaurav Trains were conducted during the financial year 2024-25, attracting 9,246 tourists to Tamil Nadu. Notably, Tiruchirapalli was included in four of these trips, welcoming 1,923 visitors. Furthermore, IRCTC has organized tours connecting Southern India with North Eastern destinations as part of the Yuva Sangam Tours. This initiative, under the “Ek Bharat Shresth Bharat” scheme, aims to foster cultural exchanges and strengthen connections among youth from various states and Union Territories.
Domestic Air Packages and Tourism Connectivity
IRCTC also offers domestic air packages that enhance tourism connectivity between the North Eastern Region and South India. These packages include options like the “Kerala Luxe Escape” from Bagdogra and Guwahati, featuring popular destinations such as Munnar, Thekkady, and Kochi. Each package is designed to provide a comprehensive travel experience, with itineraries spanning six nights and seven days. The initiative aims to promote tourism while providing travelers with a chance to explore the rich cultural heritage and natural beauty of both regions.
Promoting Sustainable Tourism
North East India and South India both present unique opportunities for tourism-based livelihoods, emphasizing cultural experiences, eco-friendly practices, and sustainable farming. Community-based tourism, culinary tourism, and cultural performances are just a few of the avenues through which local communities can benefit. The integration of cultural exchange programs and tourism initiatives not only preserves heritage but also empowers local populations, paving the way for a sustainable and inclusive future. This information was shared by Union Minister for Tourism and Culture, Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, in a recent Lok Sabha session.
