INS Sudarshini Fosters Maritime Diplomacy in Las Palmas
The Indian Navy’s Sail Training Ship, INS Sudarshini, recently wrapped up a significant three-day port visit at Las Palmas in the Canary Islands, concluding on April 26, 2026. This visit marks a notable milestone in its Lokayan 26 transoceanic expedition, emphasizing the themes of maritime diplomacy and professional engagement.
During the visit, the Commanding Officer of INS Sudarshini met with Rear Admiral Santiago de Colsa Trueba, the Chief of the Canary Islands Naval Command. This meeting underscored the strengthening of bilateral relationships and highlighted the growing partnership between the Indian Navy and its Spanish counterpart.
Community Engagement and Cultural Exchange
INS Sudarshini was open to the public, attracting visitors from the local community as well as members of the Indian diaspora. The ship provided an opportunity for guests to experience India’s rich maritime heritage firsthand. Guided tours allowed visitors to learn about ocean sailing and foster friendships across the waters.
Next Stop: Mindelo, Cape Verde
Following its time in Las Palmas, INS Sudarshini is set to journey to Mindelo, Cape Verde, which will be its final stop in Africa before crossing the Atlantic Ocean. This expedition has already seen the ship complete seven port calls, engaging with various navies throughout West Asia, the Mediterranean, Europe, and Africa. The voyage exemplifies the Indian Navy’s dedication to building ‘Bridges of Friendship’ and fostering mutual trust among nations.
