Innovative Steel Slag Technology Promises Sustainable Road Solutions
Union Minister of State for Science and Technology, Dr. Jitendra Singh, has advocated for the adoption of steel slag-based technology to enhance sustainable road construction, especially in challenging hilly terrains. During an event in New Delhi, he emphasized the need for increased awareness and training in the Himalayan States and Union Territories (UTs), where the implementation of this technology has been notably limited.
The Minister’s comments came as he officiated the signing of an agreement between the Technology Development Board (TDB) and Visakhapatnam’s Ramuka Global Eco Work Private Limited, which will oversee the commercial production of ECOFIX, a ready-to-use mix designed for pothole repairs. Workshops aiming to educate state agencies about this innovation will be ongoing, with a two-day session in Jammu & Kashmir scheduled for next week.
Workshops and Future Plans
Dr. Singh pointed out that several Himalayan states could particularly benefit from steel slag technology, given their unique challenges like shorter working seasons and heavy rainfall, which often lead to road damage. Yet, there remains a notable gap in awareness among engineers and officials about this beneficial technology.
Two years back, trials utilizing this technology began with projects in locations such as Surat, Gujarat, and regions in the Northeast, including Arunachal Pradesh. Since then, various states, including Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, and Assam, have utilized steel slag solutions to differing degrees. However, according to the Minister, many potential users, particularly senior engineers, are still unaware that these options exist, highlighting the urgency for improved outreach efforts.
ECOFIX: A Sustainable Solution
The signing ceremony also marked a significant step in the commercial rollout of ECOFIX, developed by the CSIR–Central Road Research Institute (CRRI). This product transforms processed iron and steel slag—industrial waste—into a ready-to-use pothole repair mix, suitable for application even in wet conditions. This innovation promises to minimize repair times and lessen disruptions to traffic.
Officials report that ECOFIX has passed extensive laboratory validation and field testing, showcasing greater durability and lower lifecycle costs compared to traditional repair methods. Using steel slag not only enhances road resilience but also contributes to the circular economy by reducing reliance on natural aggregates.
Public-Private Synergy
Dr. Jitendra Singh stressed the importance of ensuring publicly funded research delivers tangible benefits to the public. He highlighted how innovations like ECOFIX exemplify the transition of scientific solutions from research settings to real-world applications, addressing common issues such as potholes that jeopardize road safety and increase commuter frustrations. He also noted a shift in public-private partnerships, evident in this project where private investment matches government support.
The collaboration aims to create a facility dedicated to processing iron and steel slag with an annual capacity of nearly 200,000 tonnes, expected to commence production by late 2027. This facility will be strategically situated near major steel manufacturers to guarantee a consistent supply of raw materials while generating employment opportunities in the vicinity.
