Indo-German Collaboration Boosts Mobile Health and Telemedicine

The IGSTC Strategic Conclave 2026 focusing on “Mobile Health & Telemedicine” took place today at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi. The event gathered policymakers, scientists, industry representatives, and healthcare experts to explore collaborations aimed at enhancing digital health solutions between India and Germany.

Dr. Kusumita Arora, Director of IGSTC, emphasized the importance of this conclave as a platform for key stakeholders from various sectors, including government, healthcare, and academia, to engage in meaningful discussions. She believes that conversations among these groups are essential for driving innovation and overcoming unresolved technical challenges in health technologies.

Telemedicine’s Role in Armed Forces

Surg VAdm Dr. Arti Sarin, Director General of Armed Forces Medical Services (DGAFMS), spoke on the significance of telemedicine within military healthcare, which caters to around 16 million personnel, veterans, and their families. She outlined the evolution of telehealth from simple consultations to advanced satellite-enabled platforms that facilitate healthcare in remote maritime and high-altitude regions. To enhance the effectiveness of telehealth, Dr. Sarin called for secure communication channels, wearable health monitoring devices, AI-based diagnostics, and clearer regulations for telehealth applications in sensitive operational areas.

Biotechnology and Innovation

Dr. Jitendra Kumar, Managing Director of BIRAC, highlighted the pivotal role of biotechnology in advancing digital health. He stressed the need for support for startups and innovators at the crossroads of diagnostics, digital platforms, and medical technology. Dr. Kumar advocated for structured funding and mentorship to keep talent in India and to transform local innovations into accessible healthcare solutions. Furthermore, he noted that international partnerships, particularly with German entities, could aid in developing solutions tailored to India’s diverse healthcare needs.

Integration of Telemedicine in National Health Framework

Dr. Sunita Sharma, Director General of Health Services, explained how telemedicine is being integrated into India’s broader digital health initiatives under the National Digital Health Mission. She revealed that telemedicine services have reached even rural areas up to the Ayushman Mandir level, improving healthcare access for underprivileged communities. She also pointed to the crucial role of AI, machine learning, and point-of-care technologies in national health programs like tuberculosis eradication, while calling for robust regulatory mechanisms and privacy safeguards.

Industry Perspectives and Future Directions

Mr. Pavan Chaudhary, Chairman of the Medical Technology Association of India, echoed the need for focused translational research and incentivized innovations. During the conclave, Dr. Arindam Bhattacharyya from the Department of Science and Technology (DST) stressed the necessity for building innovation ecosystems that align science, technology, and public health priorities. He urged that mobile health technologies must progress from pilot projects to scalable platforms capable of addressing healthcare challenges, particularly in underserved regions.

Throughout the conclave, participants engaged in discussions about emerging technologies such as AI diagnostics, remote monitoring, and wearable health devices. They also deliberated on regulatory frameworks, data protection, financing strategies, and bridging the digital divide. The consensus underscored the importance of bilateral collaborations and structured research plans to promote advancements in deep technologies suited for India’s unique socio-economic environment.
