IndiGo Flight Cancellations Lead to Significant Drop in On-Time Performance, Causing Airport Chaos

IndiGo Airlines is facing a significant operational crisis, with its on-time performance plummeting to a mere 8.5% at six major metro airports, as reported by the Civil Aviation Ministry. This alarming decline marks the fourth consecutive day of disruptions, leading to widespread cancellations and delays. On Friday alone, the airline canceled over 400 flights, exacerbating the chaos for passengers already grappling with long waits and inadequate assistance at airports.

Mass Cancellations and Passenger Struggles

The turmoil at IndiGo reached new heights as the airline canceled all departing flights from Chennai Airport until 6 PM and suspended departures from Delhi Airport until midnight. This disruption follows the cancellation of more than 550 flights just a day prior, a figure significantly higher than the airline’s typical operational interruptions. Passengers at various airports, including Pune, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad, and Goa, have reported being stranded for days, facing a lack of food, water, and assistance. Many travelers have expressed frustration over missing luggage and long delays, with some flights being postponed by over 12 hours. The situation has led to long queues as passengers attempt to rebook their tickets or retrieve their belongings, often without clear information on when they might be able to travel.

Impact on the Aviation Sector

IndiGo’s operational issues are particularly concerning given that it accounts for approximately 65% of India’s domestic air travel market. The widespread cancellations have begun to affect other airlines as well, leading to a ripple effect throughout the aviation sector. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has intervened, mandating IndiGo to provide a comprehensive plan addressing pilot hiring, training schedules, roster adjustments, and safety evaluations. The DGCA has also required the airline to submit progress reports every 15 days to monitor the situation closely.

Regulatory Oversight and Future Plans

In response to the ongoing crisis, IndiGo has assured the DGCA that it aims to restore normalized operations by February 10, 2026. The airline currently operates a fleet of over 400 aircraft and conducts more than 2,300 flights daily, connecting over 90 domestic and 45 international destinations. Despite being recognized as the “Best Airline in India and South Asia” at the 2025 Skytrax Awards, the airline is now grappling with a significant crew shortage. Data indicates that while IndiGo has 2,357 captains and 2,194 first officers available for December, the demand has surged due to updated Flight Duty Time Limitations (FDTL) rules.

Challenges Ahead for IndiGo

The recent increase in domestic flights by 6% has further strained IndiGo’s operations, leading to a mismatch between flight capacity and available pilots. The airline’s crew requirements have escalated sharply, with November figures showing a need for 2,422 captains and 2,153 first officers, surpassing the previous month’s needs. The updated FDTL regulations, which restrict the number of night landings per pilot, have particularly impacted night operations. As IndiGo navigates these challenges, passengers continue to bear the brunt of the disruptions, facing not only cancellations but also rising ticket prices amid the ongoing crisis.
