IndiGo Expands Flight Reductions to Include Wide-Body Services to Europe and the UK

NEW DELHI: IndiGo Airlines has announced significant changes to its international flight operations, particularly affecting its wide-body aircraft services to Europe and the UK. Starting February 17, the airline will suspend its flights to Copenhagen indefinitely. The decision comes in response to ongoing operational challenges, including geopolitical tensions and congestion at airports, which have strained the airline’s schedule and reliability. IndiGo aims to enhance its operational performance and minimize disruptions for its customers.

Operational Challenges Prompt Flight Adjustments

IndiGo has cited a range of external factors that have impacted its wide-body operations. These include continuously changing airspace restrictions due to geopolitical circumstances and increasing congestion at airports both in India and abroad. As a result, the airline has experienced longer flight and block times, which have put pressure on its Boeing 787-9 aircraft fleet. To address these issues, IndiGo has decided to implement immediate changes to its flight schedule to improve on-time performance and operational reliability.

The airline’s adjustments include the suspension of its Copenhagen flights, which will remain in effect until further notice. Additionally, IndiGo will reduce its Delhi-Manchester services from five flights per week to four starting February 7, and further down to three flights per week from February 19. This reduction will decrease the total number of weekly services to Manchester from nine to seven. The airline has indicated that these changes were initially planned for the summer schedule of 2026 but have been expedited to ensure reliability across its long-haul operations.

Changes to London and Manchester Services

In addition to the suspension of Copenhagen flights, IndiGo will also adjust its Delhi-London Heathrow services. Beginning February 9, the frequency of these flights will be reduced from five times a week to four. These modifications are part of the airline’s broader strategy to enhance the reliability of its long-haul services during the current winter schedule.

IndiGo has expressed its commitment to proactively communicate with affected customers, offering alternative flight options or timely refunds and compensation in accordance with applicable regulations. The airline acknowledges that the current circumstances have impacted its operational reliability on the Boeing 787-9 routes and is taking steps to mitigate these disruptions.

Future Plans and Network Expansion

As part of its strategy to expand its international network, IndiGo initiated a wide-body project in March 2025. This project involved a damp lease arrangement for six Boeing 787-9 aircraft from Norse Atlantic Airways. The initiative was designed as a temporary solution to support the airline’s global expansion efforts and is expected to pave the way for the introduction of IndiGo’s own A350-900 wide-body aircraft, scheduled for early 2028.

IndiGo remains vigilant in monitoring external developments that may affect its operations. The airline has stated that it will continue to adapt its network flexibly, scaling operations up or down as necessary to align with evolving conditions. This proactive approach aims to ensure that IndiGo can maintain a reliable service for its customers while navigating the complexities of international air travel.
