India’s Tourism Sector Transforms with Major Infrastructure Boost
The Indian tourism landscape is witnessing remarkable growth, underscored by extensive infrastructure developments over the past decade. Union Minister for Tourism, Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, highlighted this transformation at a press conference in New Delhi, emphasizing how the last 11 years have marked a significant shift in road, rail, and waterway transport, bolstering the national economy and enhancing the tourism sector’s potential.
Tourism Growth Reflects Policy Success
India’s tourism sector has expanded significantly since 2014, driven by strategic policy initiatives and robust infrastructure investment. According to Minister Shekhawat, these advancements have positioned India as a leading destination for travelers from around the world. The country recorded astonishing figures from 2014 to 2024, including:
- 161.16 million International Tourist Arrivals (ITAs)
- Foreign Tourist Arrivals (FTAs) surged to 86.22 million, compared to 52.99 million in the previous decade.
- Foreign Exchange Earnings (FEEs) more than tripled, reaching approximately Rs. 18.85 lakh crore.
- Domestic Tourism visits skyrocketed to 18,639.35 million.
Infrastructure Developments at the Forefront
Under the Swadesh Darshan Scheme launched in 2015, a total of 76 projects have been approved with an investment of Rs. 5,290.33 crore, of which 75 have been completed. The subsequent phase, Swadesh Darshan 2.0, focuses on sustainable and destination-centric tourism with an additional 53 projects and an investment of Rs. 2,208.27 crore.
Moreover, the Challenge-Based Destination Development (CBDD) initiative has approved 36 projects worth Rs. 648.11 crore, enhancing tourism in sectors like Spiritual Tourism, Cultural Heritage, and Ecotourism. These initiatives are designed to improve visitor experiences and make attractions more accessible.
Expanding Connectivity for Tourists
India has seen a dramatic expansion of its National Highway network, which has increased by 60% from 91,287 km in 2014 to 1,46,195 km currently. This boost in connectivity allows easier access to key tourist destinations and supports the growing influx of visitors. The network was just 65,569 km long in 2004, showcasing substantial advancements in infrastructure.
In addition to these efforts, long-term interest-free loans amounting to Rs. 3,295.76 crore have been allocated for 40 projects under the Development of Iconic Tourist Centres scheme, set to enhance the standards of various tourist destinations across 23 states.
