India’s TIDE 2.0 Boosts Startup Ecosystem with Comprehensive Support
The Government of India is dedicated to fostering a dynamic startup ecosystem through a lifecycle-based approach. This innovative model supports startups at every stage of their journey, from initial ideas and proof of concept to prototype development, product creation, and rigorous testing.
TIDE 2.0: A Game Changer for Entrepreneurs
Launched in 2019, the “Technology Incubation and Development of Entrepreneurs 2.0 (TIDE 2.0)” Scheme is a cornerstone of this approach. TIDE 2.0 aims to cultivate technology-driven entrepreneurship by providing essential financial and technical backing to incubators across the nation.
To achieve its goals, the program has selected 51 incubators positioned at key Institutes of Higher Learning and top research and development organizations throughout India. With an impressive funding allocation of Rs. 264.62 crore over the next five years, TIDE 2.0 is set to support around 2,000 technology startups.
These incubators are vital, offering startups necessary expertise, robust industry connections, and ecosystem partnerships. So far, TIDE 2.0 has aided 1,706 startups, all of which are showing promising signs of growth.
Adapting to Market Demands
As startups navigate the competitive landscape, their relationship with incubators adapts to reflect real-world challenges. Key focus areas include achieving product-market fit, addressing specific lab needs, overcoming technological hurdles, securing funding, and ensuring long-term financial health.
Often, incubators play a crucial role in facilitating quick validations of ideas and assisting startups in pivoting to more viable paths. The movement toward sustainable business practices has led to encouraging outcomes; many of the startups involved are now witnessing significant revenue growth, climbing valuations, and increased external funding alongside numerous intellectual property filings.
To date, a notable 1,672 patents have been filed by 638 startups under this initiative.
Strengthening Intellectual Property Support
TIDE 2.0 has also introduced Centres of Excellence in Intellectual Property Rights (CoE-IP) to further bolster support for startups, small and medium enterprises, academia, and individual inventors within the Electronics and IT sectors. These centers offer a variety of IP-related services, as well as awareness and training programs.
Employing diverse revenue models, including equity exits, the CoE-IP centers are designed for long-term sustainability. So far, they have successfully assisted over 150 incubated startups in expanding their market reach globally.
TIDE 2.0 functions in synergy with other government initiatives like GENESIS, SAMRIDH, Startup India, and specialized innovation programs. Collectively, these endeavors represent a cohesive national effort to build a robust startup ecosystem that nurtures creativity and drives technological advancement in the country.
