India’s Rooftop Solar Scheme Set to Transform Energy Landscape
The Indian government’s Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSG: MBY) is making significant strides in the nation’s renewable energy sector. Launched in February 2024, the scheme aims to install rooftop solar systems in one crore households, which could generate an astounding 1,000 billion units of renewable electricity. This initiative is expected to reduce carbon dioxide equivalent emissions by 720 million tons over the 25-year lifespan of the solar projects.

Homeowners can expect an online process that simplifies application and subsidy disbursal directly to their bank accounts.
Supportive Financial Offers
Additionally, the initiative offers collateral-free loans from nationalized banks at a concessional interest rate of 5.75% per annum, with a loan tenure of 10 years. This financial support is aimed at making solar installations more accessible to the average consumer.
Streamlined Processes and Training Programs
The government has simplified the regulatory approval process by waiving certain technical requirements and introducing auto load enhancements of up to 10 kW. The application process on the National Portal now includes net metering agreements and incorporates RESCO/Utility-Led Aggregation models for better implementation.
To ensure a robust supply chain, authorities are running training programs to create a skilled workforce and are continuously conducting public awareness campaigns through advertisements in major newspapers, TV commercials, and radio broadcasts across the country.
Ongoing Monitoring and Support
The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) and REC Ltd. are partnering closely with all DISCOMs to ensure smooth enforcement of the PMSG: MBY. Regular reviews and monitoring of the scheme’s progress are conducted, along with established grievance redressal mechanisms. A dedicated call center operates in 12 languages, providing timely assistance to customers.
