India’s Power Sector Strengthens: T&D Companies Backed by Rs 9 Lakh Crore Capital Expenditure Initiative

In the coming years, India’s transmission and distribution (T&D) sector is poised for significant growth, driven by an investment of nearly Rs 9 trillion (approximately Rs 9 lakh crore) projected through 2032. A recent report from Motilal Oswal Financial Services highlights that the current investment cycle, which commenced in FY22-23, has already enhanced performance across the sector. While there has been a slowdown in new project orders in FY26, the overall outlook remains optimistic, bolstered by strong demand and capacity expansions both domestically and internationally.

Investment Surge and Sector Performance

The T&D sector in India is experiencing a robust capital expenditure (capex) outlay, with an expected investment of Rs 9 trillion until 2032. This influx of funds is anticipated to lead to substantial growth in order books, revenue, and profit margins for industry players. The report emphasizes that the ongoing investment cycle has positively impacted the sector’s performance, indicating a healthy trajectory for future developments. Despite a slowdown in new project orders in FY26, attributed to temporary bandwidth constraints, the report reassures stakeholders that this does not reflect a fundamental decline in demand. Instead, it suggests that local manufacturers are currently prioritizing high-voltage transformers, which require longer manufacturing and testing timelines, resulting in delivery delays.

Strong Demand Amid Supply Challenges

Demand for transformers remains robust, driven by both domestic and export markets. The report notes that while demand continues to surge, transformer supply has struggled to keep pace, leading to longer waiting times and favorable conditions for manufacturers. This scenario has created a demand-supply mismatch, which has resulted in rising prices and increased imports. The global landscape is also witnessing a significant uptick in demand, particularly in the US and Europe, where the integration of renewable energy, expansion of data centers, and the electrification of industries are driving the need for upgraded infrastructure. This growing demand presents a unique opportunity for Indian manufacturers, who are increasingly becoming integral to global supply chains.

Future Opportunities in High-Voltage Projects

Looking ahead, the report identifies promising opportunities in high-voltage direct current (HVDC) projects. Out of a total pipeline of 32.3 GW, approximately 14.5 GW has already been tendered and awarded, with expectations for one to two HVDC awards annually in the future. This segment is expected to play a crucial role in meeting the increasing energy demands while facilitating the integration of renewable energy sources. The National Electricity Plan of India, which includes ambitious investments in transmission infrastructure, is expected to further accelerate order placements in the coming years.

Outlook for Earnings Growth

The report anticipates that transformer manufacturers will continue to achieve strong earnings growth from FY25 to FY28. However, it also cautions that current valuations may no longer be considered inexpensive. Despite this, the potential for further earnings upgrades and the unfolding of export opportunities could sustain these valuations, indicating sustained interest in the sector. As India positions itself as a key manufacturing hub within global supply chains, the T&D sector is likely to remain a focal point for investment and growth in the years to come.
