India’s Indigenous AI Model

India is on the verge of launching its own indigenous artificial intelligence (AI) model, designed to be safe, secure, and affordable. Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw, made this announcement in New Delhi at Electronics Niketan. This initiative is a significant step for India, which aims to establish itself as a reliable technological powerhouse in the global AI landscape. The new AI model will cater to the unique needs of the Indian context, including the use of local languages. Currently, the initiative boasts around 10,000 Graphic Processing Units (GPUs), with plans to expand this number to 18,693. This capacity is nearly nine times that of the open-source model DeepSeek and about two-thirds of what ChatGPT utilizes. The government aims to democratize access to this computing power, making it available to researchers, students, and developers at a fraction of the cost of global alternatives. After a 40% government subsidy, users will pay less than ₹100 per GPU hour, compared to the global rate of $2.5 to $3 per hour. This affordability is expected to empower startups and researchers, fostering innovation across various sectors.

The initiative has garnered significant interest from technical partners, who are optimistic about its potential to deliver world-class AI solutions. The common computing facility will soon be operational, allowing widespread access to this powerful resource.
