India’s Health Insurance Sector Sees Impressive 9% Growth

The health insurance sector in India is booming, with a growth rate of approximately 9%. This surge is reflected in the total health insurance premiums, which are expected to surpass ₹1.2 lakh crore in the fiscal year 2024-25. The expansion is largely attributed to increasing public awareness, better access to healthcare financing, and a growing need for financial protection against medical costs.

Streamlined Claims Processing for Better Healthcare Access

To improve efficiency and provide timely assistance to policyholders, the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) has implemented specific timelines for cashless health insurance claims. Under these new guidelines, cashless pre-authorizations must be processed within one hour, while final authorizations are to be completed within three hours. These measures are designed to minimize delays, ensuring that patients have timely access to necessary medical care.

Rising Health Insurance Premiums Explained

The rise in health insurance premiums can be attributed to various factors, including an aging policyholder population, increased coverage, and enhanced product features. The regulations set forth by IRDAI for 2024 emphasize the importance of pricing insurance products fairly based on relevant risk factors. These products are reviewed periodically by the Appointed Actuary, who uses credible data and customer feedback to ensure they remain viable and offer good value.

Claims Settlement Performance

Data on health claims settlements demonstrate a positive trend. For the financial years 2022-23, 2023-24, and 2024-25, the claims paid ratios (by number of claims) are as follows:

  • 2022-23: 85.66%
  • 2023-24: 82.46%
  • 2024-25: 87.50%

Furthermore, the IRDAI’s Bima Bharosa portal recorded 1,37,361 grievances related to general and health insurance during FY 2024-25, with an impressive 93% of these complaints (1,27,755) being resolved within the same financial year.

Understanding Claims Disallowance

Instances of claims disallowance or repudiation are mostly linked to specific policy conditions and limitations. Common reasons include exceeding the sum insured, co-payment clauses, sub-limits in policies, and exclusions for non-medical expenses. By raising awareness and educating stakeholders about these factors, IRDAI aims to build a more transparent and trustworthy environment in health insurance.
